This is my favorite part. The lines and the way he sings them just make me see a picture of kids who want to believe so desperately in this naive, optimistic view of the world; that they really can make it and that anything is possible, but in a rebellious sort of way. Like, they've been bruised and broken, but they're still ready to fight for what they love and who they love. I don't know if that fits into the rest of the song, but I just always picture that.

This song is about a relationship surrounded in lies. The singer (whether the persona here is Mangum's himself or adopted) has lied, and he feels shameful about it. A 'silver tongue' is traditionally a metaphor for someone who is good at lying - as is all the other references to silver for the same of conciseness. However, his girlfriend discovered his lie (possibly become angry - 'your teeth... for tearing'), and now he feels ashamed and 'swollen and small'. He doesn't want to talk again, because to talk again might be to lie. There is also much mistrust (All I perceive, is wasted and broken,) as in he does not see anything as truthful anymore. I don't know who lied first, but that doesn't matter. What matters is that the relationship was intertwined with, and possibly even based on, a lie, and the singer doesn't want to get committed again just to be found out.
This song is super good. I listen to it often in the car on the way home from work. Anyway, my favorite line is "the scent of you sweating smells good to me."
I guess there's a biological basis for finding something appealing in the scent of the opposite sex's perspiring, but it reminds me of my ex-girlfriend, and confronting her after she had been doing cocaine and was en route to rehab. She'd been sweating from the coke-induced tension i guess, and i remember thinking afterwards that it smelled sweet, and kind of good.
He's ashamed for how he's treated her and he cannot speak. He wants her. He needs her. But he feels he's lost her. It's appears to be a straight forward tune.

I've always found the little music box at the end of this song completly amazing. It sums the entire song up perfectly.
