New Age Lyrics
Can I have your autograph?
he said to the fat blond actress
You know, I've seen every movie you've been in
from "Pass of Pain" to "Duels of Glory"
And when you kissed Robert Mitchum
Gee, but I thought you'd never catch him
You're over the hill right now, and you're looking for love
You're over the hill right now, and you're looking for love
I'll come running to you, honey, when you want me
I'll come running to you, honey, when you want me
Can I have your autograph?
he said to the fat blond actress
You know, I know everything you've done
Anyway, I hate divorces
To the left is a marble shower
It was fun even for an hour, but
You're over the hill right now, and you're looking for love
You're over the hill right now, and you're looking for love
I'll come running to you, honey, when you want me
I'll come running to you, honey, when you want me
Something's got a hold on me and I don't know what
Something's got a hold on me and I don't know what
It's the beginning of a new age...
he said to the fat blond actress
You know, I've seen every movie you've been in

Gee, but I thought you'd never catch him

You're over the hill right now, and you're looking for love
I'll come running to you, honey, when you want me

Apparently someone changed the Wikipedia entry since tinafeygirl posted, because now it says the song is considered "a sarcastic homage to actress Shelley Winters." I wonder if it was really intended to be "sarcastic" or if that's just a rather narrow-minded assumption on the part of the Wikipedia author, as in, "It's about someone admiring a fat woman, therefore it MUST be sarcastic." What I hear is, on the other hand, is a touching story about a lonely, aging woman who finds consolation with one of her fans. Sad but sweet. Also, according to at least one of his biographies, Reed dated a few "big" women in his youth, and if that's true, then obviously he didn't find the very idea of liking a fat woman utterly ridiculous.
The live version is much more rewarding, conceptually speaking. The music is so organic and alive with energy. The ending is absolutely beautiful.
I heard it was about Novak, but double checked and it was actually more likely a homage to Shelley Winters. More plausible seeing as she starred opposite Mitchum in "The Night of the Hunter"...
I love the ending where the fuzz bass, the piano and the organ all play in unison. Doug Yule really was an incredible musician (responsible for about 80% of whats on the track)
I’ve never detected a hint of sarcasm in this song, and if that was the intent I’ll still continue to take this song as I’ve always received it: sweet, sincere, sad, and ultimately uplifting and powerful, an ode to loneliness and the hope of connection. “I'll come running to you, honey, when you want me” is one of the greatest climaxes in rock music and the meaning is that our need to connect can and will break down our barriers and when that happens it’s the most meaningful and wonderful thing there is - “a beginning of a new age.”
Anyone know who this song is about? Robert Mitchum is a great actor...
I’ve always thought the lyrics were about Marilyn Monroe, who co-starred in “River of No Return” with Robert Mitchum. She was considered “fat,” but she most definitely was not overweight at all.
According to Wikipedia, this song is about the actress Kim Novak (who by no means was 'fat'!). Mitchum and Novak never starred in a movie together though, and the movie titles are also fictional. It's still a good song and a cool, if not sarcastic, homage to Kim.
Is it really about the actress in Vertigo?
