Showdown Lyrics
We spoke our minds too clearly, assumed fundamental rights were
Inherent not as pawns but men
I do not require a gauge for freedoms of speech
'Cause I never asked to be a citizen
I never have and never will pledge allegiance
Waking up each morning with confusion in my eyes
The wind is biting through to wave hello
Seeing my reflection, an exterior of lies
I hope this shaky feeling doesn't show
As if I had to tell you, there was little left to say
Stilted conversation coloured blue
You were sitting down and you got up to walk away
I tried to stay, but I was right behind you
I was right behind you
I was right behind you
Tension in the stare I cannot bear, so close to helpless as the songs I sing
Inside me ring.
Final words are boring, never touching, oh you whispered something in my ear
I couldn't hear you
Girls with the greenest eyes
First time you have kissed
Our quiet softest sighs
A song for all of those who shot and missed
Welcome to this world imbued identity
Born, tagged, tattooed, pacified
Generously bestowed my rights and privileges
Replete with arbitrary values ascribed
There's nothing I can tell you, there's nothing I can say
Stunted conversations, censored thought
I'm completely free and liberty guaranteed
Unless, of course, you decide I'm not
But I won't be resigned to
Fall in line behind you
Tension in the air I cannot bear, so what the fuck am I accomplishing?
Absolutely nothing
All these words are boring, it's time for action but you've taught me to be a pawn
It won't last for long
Those who see through the lies
Are quickly gagged and bound
Ambition realized
Tear the whole fucking thing down
I was right behind you
I was right behind you
Inherent not as pawns but men
I do not require a gauge for freedoms of speech
'Cause I never asked to be a citizen
I never have and never will pledge allegiance
Waking up each morning with confusion in my eyes

Absolutely obsessed with this song right now, specifically the line "I never have and never will pledge allegiance" and the way it is sung. These lyrics feel very relevant to the government now even if the song is really old :)
I like the quickly gagged and bound if you see through the lies and its just a great song great lyrics great message one of my favourites
its so cool how its the emo vs the politics.. i like. the singe rfor the emo part whos name i cant remember later left ot start the weakerthans, a very emo band. i like this.
"A song for all of those who've shot and missed"
I love that line.
I, too, enjoy the dualism of this song...two different types of conflict...one between man and woman, the other between man and his government.
I'm almost three years late, but that's John K. Samson you're thinking about, bukowski_punk.
i think this song is about the book 1984
John's part of the song was called "Greenest Eyes", explaining half of the G.E./P. in the title... (still unsure of what the "P" stands for). Basically it was a "showdown" to see whose lyrics best fit the music, or something like that. If anyone can elaborate further, or offer corrections, that'd be great. ha...as if anyone still cares about this song 14 years later.
re mattt: I think the P stands for Preamble.
Amazing song, I LOVE THIS BAND I unfortunately cannot contribute to what the "G.E/P" stands for :( if anyone knows please say
G.E./P. is for Greenest Eyes/Preamble
