Well, money's getting cheaper
Prices getting steeper
Found a good woman, but I just couldn't keep her
You see times are getting tougher than tough
And things are getting rougher than rough
Well, I make a lot of money, but I just keep spendin' the stuff

They got pork chops at the market, I asked the butcher for a pound
Man, I couldn't get a pork chop when I laid my money down
Times are getting tougher than tough
Things getting rougher than rough
I make a lot of money, but I just keep spendin' the stuff

Politicians tellin' folks
Cut down on your meat
Man, why don't they cut the prices and just let the children eat?
You see, times are getting tougher than tough
Things getting rougher than rough
I make a lot of money, but I just keep spendin' the stuff

You can't afford to live,
You'd better try
Undertakers got a union now, it costs too much to die
Times gettin' tougher than tough
Things are getting rougher than rough
Well I make a lot of money but I just keep spendin'
You can make a whole lot of money and find you keep right on spendin'
I make a lot of money, but I just keep spendin' that stuff

Gentle Hour
Yo La Tengo
This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version. Great version of a great song,
