Exit Signs Lyrics
All my exit signs spin like a carnival of pretty lights
every night
The pin in the hand grenade it’s been calling out my name
like a jealous wife all my life
‘Cause if you burn it down, you still get to dance around the ashes like you’re not too old to party
But down in the afterglow, all this letting go
is just another thing you’re holding on to
It’s only for a moment then it’s gone
In a blaze of glory
All my best intentions still go wrong but I’m still trying
I still believe in love
And that just might be good enough
Finally getting out, I finally moved out of the city
‘Cause every bar in town is much too loud and
just reminds me of all the nights behind me
We used to drink away the pain of every day
and I still feel you on the stool beside me
But it’s just an empty seat, they say that memory
gets weaker every time that you remember
It’s only for a moment then it’s gone
In a blaze of glory
All my best intentions still go wrong but I’m still trying
I still believe in love
And that just might be good enough
I’m never gonna not feel a little lost
I always have, I think I probably always will
I’m not looking for a cause, I don’t believe in God
I don’t believe in heaven, I sure don’t believe in hell
I don’t need you to save me, I don’t want to be saved
I just need a little time in a quiet place
‘Cause I think I could stay and not throw this away
Please just give me today
It’s only for a moment then it’s gone
In a blaze of glory
All my best intentions still go wrong but I’m still trying
I still believe in love
And that just might be good enough

Suicidal ideation is brilliantly described in the opening of the song. While it feels cathartic to imagine disappearing, Noah admits these feelings of escape are really just something keeping him back from living a fuller life. The chorus is a grounded outlook on optimism: life is hard, it can suck, but it's worth finding the things that make live worth living. The second verse shows Noah is attempting to live a fuller life; not drinking away his pain. He references the person he used to drink with, who is gone...following the tone of the song, seems to mean they have passed away. Which leads to the first line of the chorus "It's only for a moment, then it's gone in a blaze of glory" For me, the bridge hits the hardest in this song. Part of life is feeling lost, and that's okay:
I’m never gonna not feel a little lost I always have, I think I probably always will I’m not looking for a cause, I don’t believe in God I don’t believe in heaven, I sure don’t believe in hell I don’t need you to save me, I don’t want to be saved I just need a little time in a quiet place ‘Cause I think I could stay and not throw this away Please just give me today
This song is about the slow death of the ego and letting go of the past. As the lyrics say, the letting go is something the ego tries to hold onto, but it is ultimately impossible to grasp anything and so trying to grasp brings the suffering. The realization that love might be all that is left and all that is actually graspable, so the ego comes to the realization “that might just be good enough”.
