100,000 People Lyrics

[Verse 1]
Rake at the moon where the river flows
Cut from the cloth of the winter's cold
Bound by the voice that no one hears
I've been around in a way for years
Stray from the heart the more that you know
All gussied up with no place to go
Tableside with one of your dreams
Get what you want and not what you need

[Verse 2]
Parlor games and 6 o'clock news
Hands of a stranger touching you
Wide awake encased in a dream
Everything is not as it seems
All your time is heaven sent
Days and nights all start to blend
It's not like this town to set you free
The more you look, the less you see

[Chorus]
The table's set, the rose is out
You know what this is
Miles away from places you have been
The call was made to pull the shades
The start of something new
Still nothing makes me feel the way
You do, you do, you do, you do
You do, you do, you do, you do
You do, you do, you do, you do
You do, you do, you do

[Verse 3]
The ones they say have come here before
All gather 'round the corridor
I can't seem to place your name
Know the face that I can't explain
In my mind, you're everything
Lips don't move, but voices still ring
The light inside has lost its glow
The more you see, the less you know

[Chorus]
The table's set, the rose is out
You know what this is
Miles away from places you have been
The call was made to pull the shades
The start of something new
Still nothing makes me feel the way
You do, you do, you do, you do
You do, you do, you do, you do
You do, you do, you do, you do
You do, you do, you do, you do

[Outro]
The seasons change
My mind erased
The stars all fade
But one remains the same
You do, you do, you do, you do
You do, you do, you do, you do
Must I, your grace
Unveil the face
Only to say
Nothing takes the place?
You do, you do, you do, you do
You do, you do, you do, you do
You do, you do, you do, you do
You do, you do, you do, you do

This feels like an elegy about the death of a loved one, a funeral and the deep feeling of loss. The call was made to pull the shades, about being informed of the death, with the 'something new', being life without them.

People in the corridor, the flowers, are the funeral setting, possibly be in a place out of town or around people that did not know the deceased well "Miles away from places you have been" Or maybe the afterlife.

Wide awake encased in a dream could be the sense of mourning and remembering, or a reference to life after death and also the body 'encased' in the casket.

'Your Grace' would be a pastor, and -only to say: 'nothing takes the place' of the departed would be the eulogy.

The last two verses and way he sings "nothing takes the place" is heart breaking. All the 'you do's really sink in after repeated listenings.

These and the other imagery and references may be indirect and poetic and so not literal. The rest would follow this interpretation. - D.

@david11449 It’s about Alzheimer’s or dementia and their significant other.

“The ones they say have come here before all gather 'round in the corridor”

They’ve been there before they say: family visiting.

“I can't seem to place your name, Nor the face that I can't explain, In my mind you're everything” “ The more you see the less you know”.

You feel like you know them, but you can’t quite grasp it. This happens with extreme memory loss.

“The seasons change, My mind erased, The stars all fade, But one remains the same” “Nothing makes me feel...
