Ivy Lyrics
[Verse 1]
How's one to know?
I'd meet you where the spirit meets the bones
In a faith forgotten land
In from the snow
Your touch brought forth an incandescent glow
Tarnished but so grand
[Pre-Chorus]
And the old widow goes to the stone every day
But I don't, I just sit here and wait
Grieving for the living
[Chorus]
Oh, goddamn
My pain fits in the palm of your freezing hand
Taking mine, but it's been promised to another
Oh, I can't
Stop you putting roots in my dreamland
My house of stone, your ivy grows
And now I'm covered in you
[Verse 2]
I wish to know
The fatal flaw that makes you long to be
Magnificently cursed
He's in the room
Your opal eyes are all I wish to see
He wants what's only yours
[Chorus]
Oh, goddamn
My pain fits in the palm of your freezing hand
Taking mine, but it's been promised to another
Oh, I can't
Stop you putting roots in my dreamland
My house of stone, your ivy grows
And now I'm covered
[Verse 3]
Clover blooms in the fields
Spring breaks loose, the time is near
What would he do if he found us out?
Crescent moon, coast is clear
Spring breaks loose, but so does fear
He's gonna burn this house to the ground
How's one to know?
I'd live and die for moments that we stole
On begged and borrowed time
So tell me to run
Or dare to sit and watch what we'll become
And drink my husband's wine
[Chorus]
Oh, goddamn
My pain fits in the palm of your freezing hand
Taking mine, but it's been promised to another
Oh, I can't
Stop you putting roots in my dreamland
My house of stone, your ivy grows
And now I'm covered in you
And I'm covered in you
[Bridge]
So yeah, it's a fire
It's a goddamn blaze in the dark
And you started it
You started it
So yeah, it's a war
It's the goddamn fight of my life
And you started it
You started it
[Chorus]
Oh, I can't
Stop you putting roots in my dreamland
My house of stone, your ivy grows
And now I'm covered
In you, in you
Now I'm covered in you
In you
How's one to know?

"Ivy" is the tenth track off her latest studio album titled "evermore" was produced by Aaron Dessner, and released on December 11, 2020.
What the artist means She just wants to know how she could stay faithful, loyal, happy, and joyous while he remains as faithful as he once was. She's crooning so softly, which masks the pain that she's been feeling lately. She's been up to so much good, but now she's covered in the loving of her lover (whether good or bad). He wants her to himself, even though it's clear that he can't measure up to her not so huge standards. All she wants is reciprocated love, she wants him to invest as much in this as she does. She still loves those beautiful moments that they stole, she's still living in the better days, even though those days seem long gone. Now she's covered in him, now she's covered in all his empty promises, and there seems to be no way out.
What the song means to me Unreciprocated or unrequited love is simply the worst; however, manipulation comes a not so distant second in the list of scum worthy behaviors. Taylor is calling out an ex-lover guilty of this, and in turn, she's warning Kings and Queens everywhere that they deserve so much better. The production on this track is deceptively soft, you wouldn't know the huge importance of the track if you don't look deep enough. The track is an eye-opener, it exposes so many red flags, and there are so many meaningful messages here. I will give this song a rating of 8/10.
‘ivy’ is one of the more abstract songs of Taylor Swift’s evermore. It is a song of mystery and intrigue and is a slow love story between Swift and another. This tumultuous marriage has the woman in love with another, but she is married. “My pain fits in the palm of your freezing hand/Taking mine, but it’s been promised to another” shows that the woman may be in love with him, but her hand is spoken for already. No matter how she tries to fight it, “your ivy grows,” and she is now “covered in you.” This is a story of forbidden love and what happens when one woman loves another. While it may not be the right thing to do, the reality is she cannot change her heart.
