Epiphany Lyrics
Keep your helmet, keep your life, son
Just a flesh wound, here's your rifle
Crawling up the beaches now
"Sir, I think he's bleeding out"
And some things you just can't speak about
With you I serve, with you I fall down, down
Watch you breathe in, watch you breathing out, out
Something med school did not cover
Someone's daughter, someone's mother
Holds your hand through plastic now
"Doc, I think she's crashing out"
And some things you just can't speak about
[Bridge]
Only twenty minutes to sleep
But you dream of some epiphany
Just one single glimpse of relief
To make some sense of what you've seen
With you I serve, with you I fall down, down
Watch you breathe in, watch you breathing out, out
With you I serve, with you I fall down, down
Watch you breathe in, watch you breathing out, out
Only twenty minutes to sleep
But you dream of some epiphany
Just one single glimpse of relief
To make some sense of what you've seen
Just a flesh wound, here's your rifle
Crawling up the beaches now
"Sir, I think he's bleeding out"
And some things you just can't speak about
Watch you breathe in, watch you breathing out, out
Someone's daughter, someone's mother
Holds your hand through plastic now
"Doc, I think she's crashing out"
And some things you just can't speak about
Only twenty minutes to sleep
But you dream of some epiphany
Just one single glimpse of relief
To make some sense of what you've seen
Watch you breathe in, watch you breathing out, out
With you I serve, with you I fall down, down
Watch you breathe in, watch you breathing out, out
But you dream of some epiphany
Just one single glimpse of relief
To make some sense of what you've seen

“epiphany” is a song that feature her grandfather Dean. With the lyrics, “landing at Guadalcanal in 1942” and “Keep your helmet, keep you life, son/Just a flesh wound, here’s your rifle/Crawling up the beaches now”, these are references to World War II where he fought. This is a song that haunts you and you can feel the spirits in the room with you. This is a song from another’s perspective and something that most people today will never understand. This is Swift’s ode to her grandfather’s experiences and try to commemorate his service in the best way she can.
I think this song is a transition piece attempting to demonstrate the war frontline healthcare workers have endured throughout the pandemic. It is something most will not speak of simply because there are no words, energy, stamina left for the trauma experienced. As a nurse, I have experienced the ocean-like chasm between those in the trenches, and those at home numbing their boredom via Netflix, TikTok, etc. A nurse or doctor will immediately connect the pitch of the faint beeping at the end of the song along with bass drum with the exact pitch and rate of an in-patient monitor of an acutely ill person. The faint beeping here was present throughout the song but it is as if it steps through a veil here at the end and allows the listener to immediately recognize its possibly exact pitch to that of the patient monitor that is always softly beeping in the background of every patient room. This song and subsequent soft beeping is set to 100 BPM which would be a tachycardic heart rate seen in a moderately to severely ill human being.
Taylors abilities in song writting are so masterfully demonstrated in this ethereal, dream-like nightmare composition.
As nurses exit survival mode in this new post-pandemic time we are in, they are and continue to take their own lives across the country. My our hearts and thoughts be with them as the attempt to unpack and process the horrors and trauma COVID has left for them.

This song is just breathtaking.
Drawing an arrow-straight line from her grandfathers service in WWII fighting one sort of evil to the medics - and especially the mainly female nurses - in 2020 fighting an entirely different war. Both losing friends and loved ones, both seeing things they will always find it hard to discuss, both struggling to find meaning in what they did.
If Taylor Swift's entire career had consisted of just this song it would have still been worth it.
The thirteenth track of Taylor's new album 'Folklore' was written by Taylor Swift and Aaron Dessner. Produced by Aaron Dessner. It was recorded by Jonathan Low and Aaron Dessner at Long Pond (Hudson Valley, NY). Mixed by Serban Ghenea at Mixstar Studios (Virginia Beach, VA). Mastered by Randy Merrill at Sterling Sound (New York, NY). The track was released on July 24, 2020.
What the artist means On ‘epiphany’, Taylor simply stuns as the star of her very own show. The production of this track is quite different compared to the previous twelve tracks as it brings out the angelic tone in her versatile range. I'd love to have an instrumental only album from Ms. Swift one day. On this track she's watching a lover breathing and enjoying his beautiful company without the prying eyes of the public. She's in tune with melody on this one as all her words come out crystal clear showing us once again why she's one of the greatest singers in history. She's in the company of a lover but she makes it seem as if he's an Angel because no one deserves to be serenaded so beautifully. She's craving the lover opening his eyes and taking a single glimpse of her, the angelic production of the song closes it out.
What the song means to me While I love this song and I feel that the production on it is better than the rest of the album I don't really understand what Taylor's subject matter is here. She sounds insanely good but yet she's all over the place. Maybe that's what love does? Who knows? But I really won't mind being loved by this superstar. I will give this song a rating of 6/10.
