Holy Roller Lyrics

Holy Roller sits in the garden we fled
Blood into wine, take my body instead.
Holy Roller sits in the garden we fled
Blood into wine, take my body instead.
Holy Roller

Stand
To the left of me
In paradise
Holy Ghosts will

Born of blood
In seraphim
To grip the Nazarene
Crown of God
You wear it thin
To come and rapture me

Stand
To the left of me
In paradise
Holy Ghosts will
Fade
Into oblivion
Like a blade
Falling slowly
Curse the holy down

And when I die, you won’t pray for me
That’s when I learn to
Cut my ties
And when I die, you won’t pray for me
That’s when I learn to
Cut my ties

Stand
To the left of me
In paradise
Holy Ghosts will
Fade
Into oblivion
Like a blade
Falling slowly
Curse the holy down

I think this song is about dissension & disbelief at all the various bands of extreme religious sects - when organized religion becomes a cult - and the various dangers of that actual culmination.

My Interpretation

@EternalTearsOfSorrow we Courtney has been very clear that she is a devoted Christian and the song is obviously not about that. It's clearly about dying and being with God. Read the lyrics again and then do some research when you come across a theme you don't understand instead of making stuff up. ????

@EternalTearsOfSorrow yeah absolutely. The fact that no god is going to save us. When you\'re dead, you\'re dead. There is no salvation, there is no damnation

I have no black-and-white info to set the record straight. Courtney said of the song "This song was never intended to be a single. We wrote it in January to be an “angry” pallet cleanser on an otherwise dark, moody atmospheric album. Our mission statement was: “let’s make the most ridiculous song that we can.” (via KillYourStereo.com) It sounds like a condemnation of people of faith who do not adhere to tenants and scripture, instead judging by their own standards (which is human whether within religion or music or elsewhere). Courtney apparently grew up Catholic but switched to Methodist and is intrigued by all religion and spirituality. I don't see her as mocking God but it is debatable if she is mocking people, which could be ironic considering the message I see.

My Opinion

@OutCaste “I think that religion is so ingrained into pop culture and the lives of us all. Religion. in my opinion, is the most human thing.” spin.com interview where she also talks of gatekeepers and being more diverse in the industry instead of shunning people who don't fit the mold, considering the number of metal genres that at one point would shun the religious.

What are you talking about @seth104388 You make the claim that she’s a devout Christian yet she mocks God. You accused @eternaltearsofsorrow of making stuff up yet you claim that this same person https://twitter.com/corklezlaplante/status/1341849826703503360?s=21 loves God

Straight from Courtney: “Why do so many people think Spiritbox is a Christian band? Is it because we have “spirit” in our name? Is it cause we have “holy roller” and “blessed be”? People have said this before those songs came out...Is it because I try to get people to drink my blood by saying I turned it into wine? What’s goin on?!!?!! Or: are Christian people just always asking me that because they want to listen to the band and want to make sure we are hella Godly first? If a church wants to sponsor us and give us a tour bus then HELL YEAH JESUS BLESSED BE THE NAME OF THE MUTHAFUCKIN LORDT”

It's fairly easy to see this is about the people that are sitting on the first row at church putting on a show for all to see within the congregation. When they leave the building, they aren't the "holy roller" that they portray themselves as inside the church.
