It sounds to me like the song is about a rift in a relationship that is on the verge of being destroyed. The writer is wondering if they should "chip away" and make the relationship work, or "keep defenses up" even though that may lead to a fallout. The writer seems to be having a hardship and struggling with life at the same time and risks losing the other person (possibly significant other).
What tells me that there is a hardship? -Needs a fresh start now(wants to start over with or with the other person) -Face down in a fountain (they are drowning) -Should I hit the deck, fall through the floor (can't sink any lower)
