Lost Without You Lyrics
Even if I knew which way the wind was blowing
Even if I knew this road would lead me home
Even if I knew for once where I was going
I'm lost out here without you
Rooking the baby by that window there
Planting tomatoes in the yard
Naked by the mirror putting up your hair
Baby, its hard
When the kids came to see you for the last time
I told them not to bring the children
The husbands, or the wife
I said, Just the blood this time. Just the blood
They asked to be alone with you
So I left them alone, but I didn't go far
They said, "Has he been drinking again?
He stumbled at the door
He can't take care of himself, Mama
We can't do this anymore"
You said, "Hush up, children
Let me breathe
I've been listening to you all your life
Are they hungry, are they sick?
What is it they need?
Now it's your turn to listen to me"
I was young when we met
And afraid of the world
Now its he who's afraid
And I'm leaving
"Make sure he sleeps in his bed at night
Don't let him sleep in that chair
If he holds out his hand to you, hold it tight
If that makes you uncomfortable
Or if it embarrasses you
I don't care"
Even if I knew which way the wind was blowing
Even if I knew this road would lead me home
Even if I knew for Once where I was going
I'm lost out here
Baby, I'm lost out here
I'm lost out here without you
Even if I knew this road would lead me home
Even if I knew for once where I was going
I'm lost out here without you
Planting tomatoes in the yard
Naked by the mirror putting up your hair
Baby, its hard
I told them not to bring the children
The husbands, or the wife
I said, Just the blood this time. Just the blood
They asked to be alone with you
So I left them alone, but I didn't go far
He stumbled at the door
He can't take care of himself, Mama
We can't do this anymore"
Let me breathe
I've been listening to you all your life
Are they hungry, are they sick?
What is it they need?
Now it's your turn to listen to me"
And afraid of the world
Now its he who's afraid
And I'm leaving
Don't let him sleep in that chair
If he holds out his hand to you, hold it tight
If that makes you uncomfortable
Or if it embarrasses you
I don't care"
Even if I knew this road would lead me home
Even if I knew for Once where I was going
I'm lost out here
Baby, I'm lost out here
I'm lost out here without you

To me, this part of the lyrics - a monologue, of a dying mother to her children - is one of the most beautiful expressions of marital love ever put on music:
And you said hush up children let me breath I've been listening to you all your life Are they hungry? Are they sick? What is it they need? Now it's turn to listen to me I was young when we met and afraid of the world Now it's he who's afraid and I'm leaving Make sure he sleeps in his bed at night Don't let him sleep in that chair If he holds out his hand to you Hold it tight that makes you uncomfortable Or if it embarrasses you, I don't care
All the more so, if you know that in an interview with Pitchfork Mr. Newman explained:
When my mother was dying, my father was sort of taking care of her. But he was taking too much of this medicine, so he was falling around a little bit. He didn't seem like he was taking care of her right. So my brother and I went to her and said, "Jeez, we're sorry that Dad's not doing the job for you." And she said, "Don't you say anything bad about him. From the very beginning of this, he couldn't have been better." And it really shocked my brother and I, because we never saw her express her love for him ever."
So, the beautiful lyrics of Lost Without You are biographical, and the last line of the interview adds a tragical personal note to the song - an addition you will never forget.
I sincerely hope Mr. Newman will play this song live during his upcoming European tour. Especially in Paris on 27th February when I will be attending the concert - with my wife and children...
