Travelling through time (In the hearts of slaves)
Nature flickers (Through the day and night)
(Cruelty and kindness) Chaos and creation
Many faces, many names, never sure what's black and white
Try to make it to the crossroads
But my eyes begin to fail

(x2) Protector of the travelling man, the keeper of the crossroads
Ancient myths and caravans, open doors to secret codes

Reaching the threshold (Between four sides of life)
Not here nor there (Brings out the inner child)
Every cross with every zero helps us to decide
The actions that we undertake (Knowledge will provide)
Try to make it to the crossroads
But my eyes begin to fail

(x2) Protector of the travelling man, the keeper of the crossroads
Ancient myths and caravans, open doors to secret codes

Convergence of realities, commonalities
Between theory and phenomena, the silent devotees
Bringing out the fool in man he wants to show the way
Intersecting points of view, can lead to disarray

Eshu... You know I'm caught between two worlds
Eshu... Into the void I am hurled
Eshu... I find I'm neither here nor there
Eshu... Help me now before I fall into despair

He fools us time and time again, walk away my friend
Another wrong direction, a rolling of dice
Wearing black or wearing red depends on where you stand
A ghostly apparition takes you by the hand

(x2) Eshu... You know I'm caught between two worlds
Eshu... Into the void I am hurled
Eshu... I find I'm neither here nor there
Eshu... Help me now before I fall into despair

On the edge of every path our minds can be confused
Our journey only just begun the guide is not excused
Offerings and choices from the Guardian of the Door
The point at which we make the choice dictates the inner core

How many decisions give breed reality?
From the mundane to the magical, there's no guarantee
Are we all on the same path? Are we heading to the light?
Are we going through the right door?
Will we all reunite? When will we all reunite?

No the truth is what we seek, it's everything we are
Have we found the right way or have we gone too far?
There's no way we can turn back if we can't reach the cross
On the only road to reason
Will we all reunite? When will we all reunite?

Will you carry me home at the end of my time?
An offering of peace amid the confusion
Will Ifá arise and heal the broken heart
And cure the cosmic grand illusion?

Forming together, fates intertwined
Elements brought together from the dawn of the age
Languages long since forgotten brought forth
Tongues made of fire dancing through the rage

The dark horse shines, the restlessness grows
As the blood starts to flow from the cracks in the earth
Speaking all with the same heart and mind
The balance will shift as the virgin gives birth

(x2) Forming together, fates intertwined
Elements brought together from the dawn of the age
Languages long since forgotten brought forth
Tongues made of fire dancing through the rage

Travelling through time (In the hearts of slaves)
Nature flickers (Through the day and night)
I made it to the crossroads
Before my eyes could fail

You fooled me once, but not again
I walk away this time
And head in the direction I’m supposed to go
You very nearly made a fool of me
But now that I can see
The point of resurrection leads me from below

I did it all for you
I did it all for you
I did it all for you
I did it all for you

And so I look back on my time
And wonder if there's anything I could have changed
I hope you know how hard I tried
To always take the path of light
And even though sometimes I lost
The part of me that should be ever faithful
I tried to look upon the cross and hold on to what's right

(x2) I listen to your voice
Your outstretched arms they guide me
I hold on to your love, I hold on to your love
I have no other choice
Your gentle spirit revives me
I hold on to your love, I hold on to your love

And all the choices still remain
And many questions that are left unanswered
But I can see through all the pain
The right way every time...

Both as a standalone and as part of the DSOTS album, you can take this lyric as read. As a matter of public record, Jourgensen's drug intake was legendary even in the 1980s. By the late 90s, in his own words, he was grappling with massive addiction issues and had lost almost everything: friends, spouse, money and had nearly died more than once. "Dark Side of the Spoon" is a both funny & sad title for an album made by a musical genius who was losing the plot; and this song is a message to his fans & friends saying he knows it. It's painful to listen to so I'm glad the "Keith Richards of industrial metals" wised up and cleaned up. Well done sir.

Overall about difficult moments of disappointment and vulnerability. Having hope and longing, while remaining optimistic for the future. Encourages the belief that with each new morning there is a chance for things to improve. The chorus offers a glimmer of optimism and a chance at a resolution and redemption in the future. Captures the rollercoaster of emotions of feeling lost while loving someone who is not there for you, feeling let down and abandoned while waiting for a lover. Lost with no direction, "Now I'm up in the air with the rain in my hair, Nowhere to go, I can go anywhere" The bridge shows signs of longing and a plea for companionship. The Lyrics express a desire for authentic connection and the importance of Loving someone just as they are. "Just in passing, I'm not asking. That you be anyone but you”

I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.

Mountain Song
Jane's Addiction
Jane's Addiction vocalist Perry Farrell gives Adam Reader some heartfelt insight into Jane’s Addiction's hard rock manifesto "Mountain Song", which was the second single from their revolutionary album Nothing's Shocking. Mountain song was first recorded in 1986 and appeared on the soundtrack to the film Dudes starring Jon Cryer. The version on Nothing's Shocking was re-recorded in 1988. "'Mountain Song' was actually about... I hate to say it but... drugs. Climbing this mountain and getting as high as you can, and then coming down that mountain," reveals Farrell. "What it feels to descend from the mountain top... not easy at all. The ascension is tough but exhilarating. Getting down is... it's a real bummer. Drugs is not for everybody obviously. For me, I wanted to experience the heights, and the lows come along with it." "There's a part - 'Cash in now honey, cash in Miss Smith.' Miss Smith is my Mother; our last name was Smith. Cashing in when she cashed in her life. So... she decided that, to her... at that time, she was desperate. Life wasn't worth it for her, that was her opinion. Some people think, never take your life, and some people find that their life isn't worth living. She was in love with my Dad, and my Dad was not faithful to her, and it broke her heart. She was very desperate and she did something that I know she regrets."
