It's Called: Freefall Lyrics

Called to the Devil and the Devil did come
Said to the Devil "Devil, do you like drums?
Do you like cigarettes, dominoes, rum?"
He said "Only sundown, Sundays, Christmas."

Some days end when I need a few friends
Now and again, I could never hope to keep them
Thought to give friends what I thought that they wanted
Never had they needed a good friend as I've been

Don't get me ventin' on friends who resent you
'Cause all you've ever done is been a noose to hang onto
They thought was a necklace and reckless they fell into hell
Where you both hang with nothin' to do, but

Scratch, kick, let gravity win
Like, fuck this, let gravity win like
You can leave it all behind
Even the Devil need time alone sometimes

You can let it all go
You can let it all go
It's called: freefall
It's called: freefall

Called to the Devil, and the Devil said "Quit!
Can't be bothered, better handle y'all shit.
Keep about your wits man, keep about your wits.
Know yourself and who you came in with.
Can I sit down? I've been hustling all day.
I can't even count how many souls I've made.
Off the same deal you're on,
Remember: the Devil ain't a friend to no one."

But fine, true
Well, you can let it all go
You can let it all go
It's called: freefall
It's called: freefall

Called to the Devil, and the Devil said "Hey!
Why you been callin' this late?
It's like 2am, and the bars are closed at 10 in Hell
It's a rule I made
Anyway, you say you're too busy saving everybody else, to save yourself
And you don't want no help
Oh well
There's a story to tell"

Like you can let it all go
You can let it all go
It's called: freefall
It's called: freefall

You can let it all go
You can let it all go
'Cause ain't free, but falling out
That shit's easy, let me show you how
It's like....

So the protagonist is quite lonely and calls up the Devil because on some level he understands that he hit his rock bottom. With the Devil's help he wants to indulge in self-destructive behavior (thinking he's his pal) but the Devil's like, "nah, dude, I have nothing to do with it, you got yourself into this, if you want to you can drink and smoke, but don't make me part of it". But at the same time there's arrogance in the protagonist's behavior, on some level he thinks only the Devil will get him. So he goes on to V complain about his friendships but the Devil is having none of it. I'm the devil, you think l'm supposed to be evil and cruel but you yourself are great at this. You're in hell already and you keep making it worse for yourself. Stop complaining and blaming others. Even the Devil is tired of your shit. Accept that you're in a shitty situation, stop dwelling on your past trauma. Yeah, it happened, yeah it's shit but stop using it as an excuse to not get better, to explain your shitty behavior (hello, BoJack!). Stop using it as a crutch. Stop fetishising your pain thinking it somehow makes you special (hello, CXG's Sexy French Depression) You're in hell and you're stuck here. Stop looking for distractions: a chat with the devil, cigarettes, dominoes, rum, complaints. Let this pain in, live through it and then let it go. After I started therapy and got to a tiny bit more

My Interpretation

@julesso Very compelling interpretation. I think that a lot of people who have been through a bunch of shit and have been through some form of treatment, in particular, drug rehab, would find a connection to this song.

Something about the way this song is arranged and constructed speaks to me. It's unique, it's catchy and it's both dark and light simultaneously. I particularly like when the drums come in right near the end. I can't explain it but when that breakdown hits it gives me chills every time.

My interpretation is he's saying that if you can't find any more paths to take in your life, there's always the option to jump off a building. It's called freefall.
