Dance Macabre Lyrics

You'll soon be hearing the chimes
Close to midnight
If I could turn back the time
I'd make all right

How could it end like this?
There's a sting in the way you kiss me
Something within your eyes
Said it could be the last time
'Fore it's over!

Just wanna be
Wanna bewitch you in the moonlight
Just wanna be
I wanna bewitch you all night

It keeps on giving me chills
But I know now
I feel the closer we get
To the last bow

I don’t wanna end like this (Like this)
But the sting in the way you kiss me (I'm loving it)
Something within your eyes
Said it could be the last time
'Fore it's over!

Just wanna be
wanna bewitch you in the moonlight
Just wanna be
I wanna bewitch you all night
Just wanna be
I wanna bewitch you one last time with me tonight
Just wanna be
wanna bewitch you all night

Just wanna be
wanna bewitch you in the moonlight
Just wanna be
wanna bewitch you all night
Just wanna be
wanna bewitch you in the moonlight
Just wanna be
I wanna bewitch you all night

All night!

The bands lead singer Tobias Forge says of the song 'Europe was in this turmoil in the late 1340s. The plague is extremely fast. It starts off as the worst flu you've ever had and then it just goes worse and then you're dead after three days. So people were lying in the streets — corpses and all the surroundings were just falling apart. All the brothels and pubs were thriving because people started partying literally like there was no tomorrow because they were gonna die. They were just going for it. "Dance Macabre" is capturing that joyous nocturnal sort of life in a disco song'.

Song Meaning

I'm not sure about the original purpose of this song, but anyway this is how I interpret it. The play with the words "be with you" and "bewitch you" are the key to understanding the meaning of the whole song. The first time I didn't check the lyrics and I understood "be with you", and I was like " What am I hearing? KISS?" but then it all became clear.

I understand this song as a metaphor for allowing yourself to be led down a path of doom either by a person, an entity or group (Satan if you'd like to see it that way) or just by a bad choice in your life, a hobby that is pleasurable but ultimately bad for you. At least that's how I see it.

Gosh, that wordplay: Bewitch you x Be with you!

To me it sounds like this song is Satan knowing that he has failed in Gods eyes and that the end is near. He only wanted to please God and prove that he could rule the world but his reign is over and he knows that he will be banished!

My Opinion

This song is not even as complicated and Ghost fans want it to be, or think it is. First of all, nearly every fan of Ghost is under 30, at least that I have encountered, and I am older than Papa, who will be 42 this year. That being said, all of you kids are completely missing the double entendre that death universaly represents; Sexual satisfaction. ORGASM. Dance Macabre is about sex. This song is about fucking, and wrecklessly indulging in hedonistic behaviour, because you're going to die soon. How would I connect these dots? Experience kids. TF stated the setting;

My Interpretation

@AlizarinRose TF stated the setting; A plague ridden Europe, dead bodies in the street, people were dead 3 days after symptoms manifested, so what did the living do amidst the stench of rotting corpses in the street? They partied, and fucked whores all night, which I am btw, I am sacred hallowed ground because I keep men sexually staisfied. Men who are not sexually satisfied will become violent at some point, because for men, sex is a need, not a want. Those whores during that time of plague, probably kept a lot of men alive, or from doing insane crazy...

Yet there is another sexual them woven into this highly sex charged song- but I have to say something first, and it's a comparison- I may be correct, however I will own to being wrong, in assuming that not one single Ghost fans owns even one Depeche Mode album, not even Violater, and if you've heard Personal Jesus, it was likely a cover version, and who reads liner notes? Well, Depeche Mode has Martin Gore, who is also a Genius who knows how to write deliciously dark pop music that examines the various darknesses inherent in human nature, however, when...
