Eat the Elephant Lyrics

Looming, omnipresent
This task ahead, this task at hand
Ominous and daunting
Crippling undertaking, I'm frozen

Where to begin eludes me
Without you to remind me

Just take the step
Just take the swing
Just take the bite
Just go all in

Where to begin eludes me
Ruling ever deeper
This massive endeavour
Ominous and daunting
Crippling undertaking

Take the step
Take the swing
Take the bite
Just take the bite

Take the step
Take the swing
Take the buy
Just go all in

Where to begin eludes me
Without you to remind me
Just begin

Ok, so this album seems to be about the current problems with society... And, to me, this song is about procrastination... The elephant being a synonym of a huge task... And the way the song it's written is one of the best ways I've been able to deal with procrastination myself (sometimes), just go ahead actually start! Eat the elephant!

Some they would say "eat the elephant one bite at the time"...

My Interpretation

@Sibuna I believe the Elephant here is the Republican party. !

Jesus christ the more I listen to this song I realize you people are a bunch of sleeping babies. The song is sung from your perspective and its telling you to not wait just riot. Eat the rich. Sacrifice and be a good soldier quit waiting for your heroes (APC) to remind you. You think maynard cares if you quit your job to start a podcast or your scared to leave your wife and if only you had a teacher or father/ mother figure you'd know what to do. It's like you all are looking for a good Christian message and you think APC is the band for that. "If you knew what the blue bird sang at you, you would never sing along".... yes fallout boy another band with a great lyrisist who can disguise his words. Yeah they ain't singing about love either, it just sounds like they are. Here's another one "You know time crawls on when you’re waiting for the song to start , So dance along to the beat of your heart" that's not about dancing people, Its about the same thing this song is about. As a matter of fact most songs are about this. So what is disillusioned telling us to put down our phones and start a PG rated circle jerk. WAKE UP!!!!!

@Wealldiedin2012 Dude, chill.

This is just a song to set the stage for album. The rest of the album is a wake up call, pointing out the sad state of our reality. He's basically saying wake up and listen to what I have to say

I honestly think this elephant we're eating is about depression or anxiety or some other mental illness that people have a hard time getting through. This album is about today's issues and mental illness is one of the elephants in the room that we don't particularly want to address or talk about. Each song in this album is just another elephant in the room we don't want to see as a society.

Just my thoughts :)

The song refers to a quote by Desmond Tutu: “there is only one way to eat an elephant: a bite at a time.” It basically means that any endeavor, no matter how impossible it seems, can be achieved one step at a time. With the album addressing some major problems of today’s world, it serves as a perfect opening, saying “we can handle this, but we have to do something”.

"Just take the buy" in a song about eating? Who comes up with this stuff? It is "Just take the bite".... obviously. I submitted a change.

I agree this is about procrastination, but for me personally it touches on my tendency to dwell and obssess over the outcome of even small things. I stress myself out to the point that even mundane things can be blown out of proportion to the point that I am miserable and full of fear. More often than not, after completing the task at hand, it all works out and everything is fine. I suppose it's a form of anxiety but to me the tone of the song isn't about some huge undertaking in reality, but the huge undertaking that we can make out of otherwise mundane things.

Have you every tried to convince a young child to eat a food they don't want to? They will insist they don't like it, despite having never tasted it before.

Just take the bite, go all in. You want them to be present in the moment to experience the sensation and flavor of what they are eating.

Of course, they don't. They either like it, and mindless consume because it is tasty, or they refuse. Either outcomes depending on their personality, really.

But ultimately you want the child to be there in the moment. Feeling, experiencing, and present. This is what life is all about. And we need to keep trying to teach that-be present in the moment. Go all in.
