"Eat the Elephant" as written by and William L Howerdel Maynard James Keenan....
Looming, omnipresent
This task ahead, this task at hand
Ominous and daunting
Crippling undertaking, I'm frozen

Where to begin eludes me
Without you to remind me

Just take the step
Just take the swing
Just take the buy
Just go all in

Where to begin eludes me
Ruling ever deeper
This mass of endeavour
Ominous and daunting
Crippling undertaking

Just take the step
Just take the swing
Just take the buy
Just go all in

Take the step
Take the swing
Take the buy
Just take the buy

Take the step
Take the swing
Take the buy
Just go all in

Where to begin eludes me
Without you to remind me
Just begin

My InterpretationOk, so this album seems to be about the current problems with society... And, to me, this song is about procrastination... The elephant being a synonym of a huge task... And the way the song it's written is one of the best ways I've been able to deal with procrastination myself (sometimes), just go ahead actually start! Eat the elephant!

Some they would say "eat the elephant one bite at the time"...

General CommentJesus christ the more I listen to this song I realize you people are a bunch of sleeping babies. The song is sung from your perspective and its telling you to not wait just riot. Eat the rich. Sacrifice and be a good soldier quit waiting for your heroes (APC) to remind you. You think maynard cares if you quit your job to start a podcast or your scared to leave your wife and if only you had a teacher or father/ mother figure you'd know what to do. It's like you all are looking for a good Christian message and you think APC is the band for that. "If you knew what the blue bird sang at you, you would never sing along".... yes fallout boy another band with a great lyrisist who can disguise his words. Yeah they ain't singing about love either, it just sounds like they are. Here's another one "You know time crawls on when you’re waiting for the song to start , So dance along to the beat of your heart" that's not about dancing people, Its about the same thing this song is about. As a matter of fact most songs are about this. So what is disillusioned telling us to put down our phones and start a PG rated circle jerk. WAKE UP!!!!!

General CommentRead The Denial of Death or The Conspiracy Against The Human Race. We have only our delusions, our safety nets of our idolatry of our parents, our crutches of ideology and belief. Life is such a big task to swallow knowing that our individual existence is but a shimmering rainbow thread precariously helf aloft between the abyss of Non-Existence, beneath us the primordial past of the birth of Cosmos, Permian Cambrian Triassic Jurassic Cretaceoys Quartenary etc Ice Ages of extinction before YOU lived and above the immense space of Time after you die, to the heat death of this hostile meaningless Universe. The only meaning of life is this life you live, one nibble at a time with absurdist humour as you push that rock up the hill, Sisyphus. We imagine you must be happy. Otherwise there is only despair.

General CommentI honestly think this elephant we're eating is about depression or anxiety or some other mental illness that people have a hard time getting through. This album is about today's issues and mental illness is one of the elephants in the room that we don't particularly want to address or talk about. Each song in this album is just another elephant in the room we don't want to see as a society.

    Just my thoughts :)

My InterpretationThis is just a song to set the stage for album. The rest of the album is a wake up call, pointing out the sad state of our reality. He's basically saying wake up and listen to what I have to say

My InterpretationI think this song can be interpreted a number of different ways, much like anything Maynard has ever written. To me, this song has strong hints of being about suicide. It makes sense to start an album that mainly focuses on how horrible society is and not being able to take it anymore.

General CommentThis song is not so deep. These new songs are multilayered but this one in particular is simple. It is about summoning the will to overcome x. However in my experience summoning and giving 110% always connects with universal energies to complete a task overturn a wrongness or combat an overbearing scary task. It is in my opinion necessary to grow, however, it has become the shortcoming of me to hold on to things as if I have control. It is my responsibility to give up my delusion of godliness and let the universal movements flow through my fingers like warm spaghetti noodles

General CommentEat the elephant that's in the room with you/yourself when you're all alone. Kinda the same message in Disillusioned. The part about "Without you to remind me" I'd guess is a parent/teacher that's gone now. And they used to push him along/teach/encourage when they were here. The elephant in the room might be letting that person go. "This task at hand... ...Crippling undertaking, I'm frozen"

Conquer your fears. Take the step. Take the swing. Take the bite. Just go all in.

My InterpretationAgree it's about overcoming fear and procrastination, about the need to make the effort despite the fear of failure. To me the most enigmatic line is "without you to remind me" suggesting it is a deeper kind of fear, not just the fear of cleaning out your email inbox ("ominous and daunting"!), but the feeling you have after losing someone important and not knowing how to move forward. Maybe someone has died, or just gone away. Very different, but reminds me a little of an Offspring song.
