This great song's been stuck in my head all day today. I really think this is about a once good romantic relationship that's gone sour. He's saying we've had issues in the past (too many) and there's no way we can survive anymore damage so it's best we just put an end to this. He has to be cutthroat about it cause she keeps pleading with him to make it work and he's saying no, I won't be manipulated back into the mess, it's become far too toxic.
