Paris Lyrics

(Andrew Taggart)
We were staying in Paris
To get away from your parents
And I thought, “Wow!"
If I could take this in a shot right now
I don't think that we could work this out

Out on the terrace
I don't know if it's fair but I thought, How
Could I let you fall by yourself
While I'm wasted with someone else

(Andrew Taggart & Emily Warren)
If we go down, then we go down together
They'll say you could do anything
They'll say that I was clever
If we go down, then we go down together
We'll get away with everything
Let's show them we are better
Let's show them we are better
Let's show them we are better

(Andrew Taggart)
We were staying in Paris
To get away from your parents
You look so proud
Standing there with a frown and a cigarette
Posting pictures of yourself on the internet
Out on the terrace
We breathe in the air of this small town
On our own cuttin' class for the thrill of it
Getting drunk on the past we were livin' in

(Andrew Taggart & Emily Warren)
If we go down, then we go down together
They'll say you could do anything
They'll say that I was clever
If we go down, then we go down together
We'll get away with everything
Let's show them we are better

(Andrew Taggart & Emily Warren)
Let's show them we are
Show them we are
Let's show them we are
Show them we are
Let's show them we are better
We were staying in Paris
Let's show them we are better
Let's show them we are
Show them we are
Let's show them we are
Show them we are
Let's show them we are better

(Andrew Taggart & Emily Warren)
If we go down, then we go down together
They'll say you could do anything
They'll say that I was clever
If we go down, then we go down together
We'll get away with everything
Let's show them we are better

(Andrew Taggart & Emily Warren)
We were staying in Paris (If we go down)
We were staying in Paris (If we go down)
We were staying in Paris (If we go down)
We were staying in Paris (If we go down)
Let's show them we are better
We were staying in Paris

Let's show them we are better
Let's show them we are better

The chainsmokers describe this song as "a sentimental yearning for a reality that isn't genuine" and "an irrecoverable for fantasy that evokes nostalgia or day dreams". In an interview drew explains that this song is about a friend of his who was a drug addict and he was writing it from his perspective. To me this song is yes, about a man who has a girlfriend who both are drowning in the consequences of addiction, but to anyone, a situation that is so bad that you yearn for a happier reality. This song can be interpreted in many different ways

  1. A guy who has a girlfriend and they are both stuck in their lives, barely getting by. As he explains "if we go down then we go down together" he is saying how no matter what he will be with her and stick by no matter what anyone else thinks
  2. To me this song anyone can relate to. This song is about being in a tough situation and wanting to get out. Whether addiction, depression, or anything, we all have times in our lives where we desperately want to leave and go to a safe haven. We all want to go to a "Paris" of our. This song is about going to that place where everything is better while daydreaming for a reality that isn't genuine. It's about ignoring those who think your crazy and don't agree with you and going somewhere better. He knows that it isn't genuine and that no matter what he's stuck in this daydream, but life is better dreaming for him. This song is about hope and craving a new reality so badly that you daydream about it and go to so called "Paris" where everything is better.
My Interpretation
Cover art for Paris lyrics by Chainsmokers, The

This is my favorite Chainsmokers song by far. The beginning explains what the term means to the song, "a sentimental yearning for a reality that isn't genuine" and "an irrecoverable for fantasy that evokes nostalgia or day dreams."

We've all been here before but who has any idea what to call it? It's that feeling of utmost beauty in our own world that any scent, feeling, or perception can take us to. A moment in time where we felt invincible, our happiest and proudest in the memory bank. A yearning that feels so sweet but also distant and nostalgic.

A Summer growing up with a best friend, the arms of a parent as you felt safe and bonded. Within the song, it is raw, unprovoked love we carry with some. The beginning when everything is amazing, and time is beautiful. That sliver before life grips us and shows human characteristics in loved ones. When we believe a person is PERFECT, a moment in time that was PERFECT.

You can taste it, smell it, close your eyes and engulf yourself in the memory, but you will never relive it.
