I think the song is about the cycle of life / seasons in general .
In the first stanza, he mentioned: Cinnamon smell and holiday sales why would we ever move (Cinnamon smell and holiday sells could mean Christmas?) But despite of the holiday cheers we are all damned at the same time.
The second stanza is about going back to school or after summer: Tropical smells and back to school sales why would we ever move? And we are all still damned at the same time.
The chorus mean somewhat paradoxical in essence. That is the way we won't, we won't end up going home but we must get home. Idk. but this is just my interpretation.
I think he moved away and it was hard for him to leave. He's toiling over whether he should move back home and he looks at it as a lose-lose. He's saying life is so much better where he moved to and this the 'way we won't' move back home. The song has a bittersweet nostalgic/embracing the melancholic present state of affairs and hat mesmerizing guitar riff leans towards the fucked either way deal he's describing.
