Sorrow Lyrics

It feels like falling.
It feels like rain.
Like loosing my balance
again and again.
It once was so easy;
breathe in, breathe out.
But at the foot of this mountain,
I only see clouds.

I feel out of focus,
or at least indisposed
as this strange weather pattern
inside me takes hold.
Each brave step forward,
I take three steps behind.
It's mind over matter -
matter over mind.

Slowly, then all at once.
A single loose thread
and it all comes undone.

Where there is light,
a shadow appears.
The cause and effect
when life interferes.
The same rule applies
to goodness and grief;
for in our great sorrow
we learn what joy means.

I don't want to fight, I don't want to fight it.
I don't want to fight, I don't want to fight it.
I don't want to fight, I don't want to fight it.
But I will learn to fight, I will learn to fight,
'til this pendulum finds equilibrium.

Slowly, then all at once.
The dark clouds depart,
and the damage is done.
So pardon the dust
while this all settles in.
With a broken heart,
transformation begins.

Cover art for Sorrow lyrics by Sleeping At Last

I really love how this song's story is about sorrow, but it is told in a way that everyone can relate to. And also, some of the lyrics can also be interpreted in more than one way.

For example: The line "As this strange weather pattern inside me takes hold" always makes me think of my on and off battle with depression.

So, from my perspective and personal experience, I see it as a song that accurately portrays how I feel when I'm depressed and how after each episode, it's almost like a change happened: a transformation. Each time we go through a tough time, even if we don't feel like fighting it anymore because things don't seem like they'll get better, things do improve. However, all the pain and sorrow has changed us. The waves of different, often painful emotions have made us adapt to their presence until they're gone or we have learned to live with them. And, in the end, for better or for worse, we have changed. Beautifully told by the last line of the song

"With a broken heart, transformation begins"
