Everyone's Safe In The Treehouse Lyrics
I'm just a man with a vision,
Who's growing more blind everyday.
Eyes of a child now in ruins.
Scared of everything he became.
My voice wasn't loud enough for you to listen.
Your words weren't strong enough for me to stay here.
'Cause I feel your love has always been empty,
Just a way to sink your teeth into me.
But the truth is we built our house in a tree.
We build the roads we walk upon.
I feel you have the worst intentions.
Controlling everyone but me.
My voice wasn't loud enough.
Your words weren't strong enough.
'Cause I feel your love has always been empty,
Just a way to sink your teeth into me.
But the truth is we built our house in a tree.
We build the roads we walk upon.
Are you alive or are you just living?
Are you alive or are you just living?
You don't get it! You'll never get it!
Do you have a life or are you just living?
You don't get it! You'll never get it!
Do you have a life or are you just living?
I feel your love has always been empty,
Just a way to sink your teeth into me...
'Cause I feel your love has always been empty (Been empty),
Just a way to sink your teeth into me.
But the truth is we built our house in a tree.
We build the roads we walk upon.
We build the roads we walk upon.
Who's growing more blind everyday.
Eyes of a child now in ruins.
Scared of everything he became.
Your words weren't strong enough for me to stay here.
Just a way to sink your teeth into me.
But the truth is we built our house in a tree.
We build the roads we walk upon.
Controlling everyone but me.
My voice wasn't loud enough.
Your words weren't strong enough.
Just a way to sink your teeth into me.
But the truth is we built our house in a tree.

This song could be interpreted a myriad of ways. Without taking it apart stanza for stanza, I really think at it's core this song is about self apathy & self destructiveness. When someone lives in a way that they can no longer respect themselves, it's destructive (for example an addict). They often are so self loathing & detached from reality they either think no one could love them (cause they can't love themselves) or they've become so disillusioned & out of touch they don't trust anyone really does love them. It's a viscous cycle so they hide themselves away in some cases or build a barrier between themselves and the real world instead of facing their demons, at times this can even lead to suicide or some form of self harm. This song is like a cry for help, giving those suffering like this a voice when often they do not have one or wouldn't have the guts to speak of their agony.
I have always viewed this song as being deeper than simple emotional output. From an artistic standpoint, this song on the outside may denote a sense of apathy and self-destruction as noted below, however upon looking at the symbology of the song, I have deduced that this song is more closely aligned with childhood trauma.
Perhaps sexual abuse and or violence. We can see this in the first verse, where he speaks about “the eyes of a child now in ruins” followed by “my voice wasn’t loud enough for you to listen” and “I feel your love has always been empty” often referring to children who have experienced this trauma.
Furthermore, the representation of the Treehouse as a whole can be viewed as a safe place for seclusion and reflection of these traumas.
