Death of a Bachelor

I think this song (and really the whole album by the same name) is about getting married and the changes that brings about in life. Obviously, it's all pushed on to a character, though i'm sure much of the source for this comes from Brendon Urie's marriage to Sarah Orzechowski back in 2013.

Having decided to get married, he's chosen to mature, to make more serious decisions going forward etc. and it shows (I see the shadows on my face, People have told me I don't look the same, Maybe I lost weight). His friends are asking why he doesn't come out as much as he used to (Do I look lonely?) when he clearly used to be a party animal (Victorious and Don't threaten me with a good time).

He's seeing his fiancee instead of his friends (I'm playing hooky, with the best of the best) and he want's her to know that she's his priority now (Put my heart on my chest, so that you can see it too).

Even though it's scaring him, to commit to all these changes, (I'm walking the long road, watching the sky fall), even though the concept of marriage if terrifying to the modern bachelor (The lace in your dress tingles my neck) he knows this is exactly what he's going to do: it's as easy as dying (how do I live?).

The chorus makes it simple. A wedding is literally (The death of a bachelor), the end of a man being a singleton, party animal. This final, natural thing (Letting the water fall) is what has to happen for him to get what he wants out of life (Seems so fitting for, Happily ever after, How could I ask for more? A lifetime of laughter At the expense of the death of a bachelor)

He has to calm himself down, his mind is racing, he's nervous, but he knows deep down this is exactly what he wants (I'm cutting my mind off It feels like my heart is going to burst). When he would have been out picking up girls he's now happy to just go out for a drink instead of always hitting on someone (Alone at a table for two and I just wanna be served). He casts his mind back to relationships and those flings in his past, and in typical P!atd fashion (I've got more wit, a better kiss, a hotter touch, a better fuck. Than any boy you'll ever meet, sweetie you had me) gives them a little barb about how they wish he was still with them (And when you think of me am I the best you've ever had? Share one more drink with me, smile even though you're sad)

So yeah, i think this track in particular is about him settling in to the fact that he's giving up what he's had for a better future with his wife.

I see so many people say this is a happy song about him marrying his wife and starting a new stage of his life, but I've never seen that from this song. To me, this strikes me as a very unhappy song, about a man who doesn't want to be married. 'Do I look lonely? I see the shadows on my face. People have told me I don't look the same', 'the lace in your dress tangles my neck', 'Alone at a table for two and I just wanna be served' 'Am I the best you've ever had? Share one more drink with me, smile even though you're sad'. Just a few, rather clear examples this isn't a song about happily getting married. As well, the chorus strikes me as almost being sarcastic 'The death of a bachelor, seems so fitting for happily ever after. How could I ask for more?' It makes me feel like he acknowledges this should be a happy occasion, but it isn't, and he's sarcastically asking "How could I ask for more?" I think the overall tale of this song is that he's marrying someone he doesn't love, he doesn't get on with very well, and he's unhappy about that. But hey, maybe I'm totally wrong.

The song is about suicide

In the first verse, the singer is so depressed lonely after losing his girlfriend that he's stopped eating and cut off his friends. Now he is about to hang himself with his ex's undergarments.

In the second verse, he asks "When you think of me/ am I the best you ever had " which is something an ex would say at a funeral

"Share one more drink with me/ smile even though you're sad" is something that an ex would do at a wake.

In the chorus, he talks about a "lifetime of laughter/ at the expense of the death of a bachelor" In other words, he is SO depressed he believes everyone he knows will take pleasure in his passing.

The song sounds romantic, but is incredibly dark. Pure brilliance

I love this song and album! I love how the mood of this song is more slow. In this song you can really tell how great of a singer he his. It's just a great song! By far my favorite on the new album.

I think it's obvious that he's making fun of the way most men always joke about how marriage is the end. He's basically saying that 'huh, guess i' ll die then, but at least i'll die happy and in love'.
