Friendly Fires Lyrics

Oh, the things we see
Through connected wires
Are the people that flee
From friendly fire

When they separate me
And I'm being stored
With all the recessed genes
That are left ignored

Getting naked all the time
While you dodge the friendly fire

So who could ever break you down
And what could ever freak you out
If you can carry this around
Then you will never break down

People I meet
On the weekend mourn
For all the weekday freaks
That are free and bored

Like they physically
Stormed in their homes
Collect whatever they need
Just to feel employed

A little wasted on desire
A minute later, friendly fire
A little wasted on desire
A minute later, friendly fire

So could ever break you down
And what could ever freak you out
If you can carry this around
Then you will never break down

Getting naked all the time
A little wasted on desire
A minute later, friendly fire

So who could ever break you down
And what could ever freak you out
If you can carry this around
Then you will never break down
You will never break down
You can carry this around

Yeah, I have no idea. "If you can carry this around".... what is he referring to when he says "this"?

@kotraenator I believe he's referring to a cell phone, but that's just fitting for my interpretation of the song that i'm about to post.

My take on this song is that he's talking about what it's like to be young (or young adult) living in this techno-centric culture.

"Oh, the things we see Through connected wires Are the people that flee From friendly fire"

The internet, and being able to escape the pain and discomfort of your real life, and connect to online communities where you can commune with others feel at home.

"When they separate me Into being stored With all the recessed genes That are left ignored"

Being marginalized because you don't fit an expected norm of society.

"Getting naked all the time Why dodge the friendly fire?"

Opening yourself and just letting it all out, which can cause "friendly fire" when you clash with others ideals and/or misunderstanding with the people physically around you. Also, an attitude of "who cares if i lose people in real life, I can escape online and find people who understand me."

"So who could ever break you down? And what could ever freak you out? If you can carry this around Then you will never break down"

With enough curiosity on the internet (smart phone) we become jaded, and it takes excessive disturbance to really get to us.

The rest of the song is pointing out how those that are referred to (by some) as normies. Us poorfolk trying to scrape by and not have a rich man's paycheck, we still try to live a life of fun and excess as though everything is ok.

My Interpretation

@AeroGoat Also, "getting naked all the time" could be referring to having a lot of Sex.
