Looks Like Rain Lyrics

All the rivers are bending
And the mountains are peaking
And the flowers are blooming
And the meadows are rolling
Into waves, they wash up on the shore
And barely touch your toes
The clouds are crowding around us
For some reason, no one knows

[Chorus]
And I said, "Hey, looks like rain"
Then you lifted your hands and prayed
"Go away, you can come back some other day"
But they stayed and you soaked under all of the grey
And the rain washed all our cries and pleas away

Now the season is changing
And the leaves now are turning
And the birds aren't singing
And the grass isn't green anymore
Than it used to be when the sunbeams lit it up
And the clouds are crowding around us
Just to say they've had enough

[Chorus]
And I said, "Hey, looks like rain"
Then you lifted your hands and prayed
"Go away, you can come back some other day"
But they stayed and you soaked under all of the grey
And the rain washed all our cries and pleas away

And now the current takes us out
And all the ripples turn to waves
The wind begins caressing
All the branches to a sway
The air shattered the glass
It felt like crystals on your face
I took you in my arms
And I could hear you saying grace

[Chorus
And I said, "Hey, looks like rain"
Then you lifted your hands and prayed
"Go away, you can come back some other day"
But they stayed and you soaked under all of the grey
And the rain washed all our cries and pleas away

Cover art for Looks Like Rain lyrics by Passion Pit

First off, this is one of my fav passion pit songs. just incredibly simple and beautiful lyrics amassed into one narrative.

I think this is about the lifespan of a (relatively) short lived relationship. At the start, mountains are peaking, flowers are blooming, and meadows are rolling. There are a few waves washing up to shore, but they only barely touch their toes. The waves are foreshadowing imminent problems as they relationship ages. They don't know why the clouds are coming, but they are.

They recognize the rain that is starting to come down on them but all they can do is pray it goes away. She pleads "Go away, come back some other day". They didn't flee to get out of the storm, they stayed hoping they could weather it.

In the second verse, the hard times strike. the season is changing And the leaves now are turning And the birds aren't singing And the grass isn't green anymore Than it used to be when the sunbeams lit it up.

Towards the end, we experience the conclusion of this relationship. The current takes them out and all the ripples turn to waves. The air shattering the glass is a metaphor for the fragility of a relationship and how lack of care for one can spell doom for it when a big or unexpected wind comes.

In the end, the rain washes their cries and pleas away because it caused them to part ways.
