Hometown Lyrics

A shadow tilts its head at me
Spirits in the dark are waiting
I won't let the wind, go quietly
I won't let the wind, go quietly

Be the one, be the one
To take my soul and make it undone
Be the one, be the one
To take me home and show me the sun
I know, I know
You can bring the fire, I can bring the bones
I know, I know
You make the fire in my bones, and make it grow

Where we're from
There's no sun
Our hometown's in the dark
Where we're from
We're no one
Our hometown's in the dark
Our hometown's in the dark

A shadow tilts its head at me
Spirits in the dark are waiting
I won't let the wind, go quietly
I won't let the wind, go quietly

Put away, put away
All the gods your father served today
Put away, put away
Your traditions, believe me when I say
We don't know, we don't know
How to put back the power in our soul
We don't know, we don't know
Where to find what once was in our bones

Where we're from
There's no sun
Our hometown's in the dark
Where we're from
We're no one
Our hometown's in the dark
Our hometown's in the dark

A shadow tilts its head at me
Spirits in the dark are waiting
I won't let the wind, go quietly
I won't let the wind, go quietly

Where we're from, there's no sun
Our hometown's in the dark
Where we're from, we're no one
Our hometown's in the dark

"A shadow tilts its head at me Spirits in the dark are waiting I won't let them win, go quietly I won't let them win, go quietly" I think the shadow is 'blurryface' or the character he has created to represent his insecurities. i think the spirits in the dark are with 'blurryface', and are all of his doubs, fear, insecurities, and thoughts trying to pull him in, and he is saying he wont let them win, that he will beat them.

" Be the one, be the one To take my soul and make it undone Be the one, be the one To take me home and show me the sun I know, I know You can bring the fire, I can bring the bones I know, I know You make the fire in my bones, and make it grow" im not sure exactly what this part is about, but I think it might be referencing his faith, and this is tyler talking to god and asking him to heal him or fix him and make the voices stop and make him into someone different. and perhaps 'home' is heaven or just back to his old state of mind before he had these thoughts. im not really sure whom the person is he is talking to but he is basically saying that they will help him, and make him better.

"Where we're from There's no sun Our hometown's in the dark Where we're from We're no one Our hometown's in the dark Our hometown's in the dark" maybe this is saying that ohio is kind of unknown and theyre in the dark, and they weren't that known. but i also think the reference to the dark is lik representing his depression and the voices, and he is saying that like there was no help or 'sun'. im not really sure about this part.

"" A shadow tilts its head at me Spirits in the dark are waiting I won't let them win, go quietly I won't let them win, go quietly" i think this is him showing that he is trying to fight the darkness mentioned above? or is just repition bc that's how songs work

" Put away, put away All the gods your father served today Put away, put away Your traditions, believe me when I say We don't know, we don't know How to put back the power in our soul We don't know, we don't know Where to find what once was in our bones" i think this is him saying to put away your faith or what your family or others say you should do, and just focus on pushing away the darkness. i don't know, this is one of their harder songs to interpret, i feel like they did that on purpose so people could use it to help them through whatever they need it for. i think it could relate to religion, or depression, or just going back to family. im not sure, this is all just things i made up.

"A shadow tilts its head at me Spirits in the dark are waiting", I think Tyler is implying mental demons/ blurryface, waiting in the dark for a chance to control his thoughts

"Be the one, be the one To take my soul and make it undone Be the one, be the one To take me home and show me the sun I know, I know You can bring the fire, I can bring the bones I know, I know You make the fire in my bones, and make it grow" He is talking to God, take him home to heaven maybe? Make his soul undone because god is such a confusing, awe-filled entity (?) "bring the fire" meaning rekindle Tylers faith, "I can bring the bones" meaning he will bring himself/give himself to restore his faith, and to make his soul grow ..

"Where we're from There's no sun Our hometown's in the dark Where we're from We're no one Our hometown's in the dark Our hometown's in the dark"

I think hometown = heaven, and its "in the dark" because so many are turning away from God, and not believing. "where we're from" is said maybe because both Josh and Tyler are christians

"Put away, All the gods your father served today Put away, Your traditions, believe me when I say We don't know, How to put back the power in our soul..We don't know, Where to find what once was in our bones" I think this means that you should forget about all the false gods that you may be led to believe...idk what's meant by traditions...."how to put the power back in our bones....where to find what once was in our bones" we don't know how to restore our faith in god, or where to look because society has changed so much and there's so many people who don't believe that its hard to find the path to God now..

I'm sorry this was so long, I tried to cover everything I thought(: I also think it could be referencing depression/suicide-like themes but this theory was the first that came to mind....all said was just my interpretation, yours could be completely different and still be correct, that's the great thing about music xD thanks for reading if you did

@Ríøna I actually think that "hometown" is not Heaven, but earth. And "our" would be all the people. It's dark because, like you said, people are turning from God and God is the light. I think this is part of his earlier request--he's telling God his predicament. Just my thoughts.

There are some pretty blatant biblical allusions here:

"Put away, put away all the gods your father served today Put away, put away your traditions, believe me when I say"

Now therefore fear the LORD, and serve him in sincerity and in truth: and put away the gods which your fathers served on the other side of the flood, and in Egypt; and serve ye the LORD. - Joshua 24:14 KJV

...

"Be the one, be the one to take my soul and make it undone Be the one, be the one to take me home and show me the sun"

Then said I, Woe is me! for I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips: for mine eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts. - Isaiah 6:5 KJV

I know, I know You can bring the fire, I can bring the bones I know, I know You make the fire in my bones, and make it grow"

Then I said, I will not make mention of him, nor speak any more in his name. But his word was in mine heart as a burning fire shut up in my bones, and I was weary with forbearing, and I could not stay. - Jeremiah 20:9 KJV

...

As for the chorus:

Where we're from We're no one Our hometown's in the dark

And they were deeply offended and refused to believe in him. Then Jesus told them, "A prophet is honored everywhere except in his own hometown and among his own family." - Matthew 13:57 NLT

Saying, If thou hadst known, even thou, at least in this thy day, the things which belong unto thy peace! but now they are hid from thine eyes. - Luke 19:42 NLT

TOP IS UNDERRATED ----

Jeremiah 20:9 But if I say, "I will not mention his word or speak anymore in his name," his word is in my heart like a fire, a fire shut up in my bones. I am weary of holding it in; indeed, I cannot. Be the one, be the one To take my soul and make it undone Be the one, be the one To take me home and show me the sun I know, I know You can bring the fire, I can bring the bones I know, I know You make the fire in my bones, and make it grow

Joshua 24:14 Now therefore fear the Lord and serve him in sincerity and in faithfulness. Put away the gods that your fathers served beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve the Lord. Put away, put away, All the gods your father served today, Put away, put away, Your traditions, believe me when I say

Luke 1:78 because of the tender mercy of our God, by which the rising sun will come to us from heaven 79 to shine on those living in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the path of peace. Isaiah 9:2 - The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of deep darkness a light has dawned.

Where we're from, there's no sun, Our hometown's in the dark, Where we're from, we're no one, Our hometown's in the dark, Our hometown's in the dark

"A shadow tilts its head at me, Spirits in the dark are waiting, I won't let them win, go quietly I won't let them win, go quietly"

What I think about this part is that the shadow is BlurryFace and the spirits are his insecurities/fears.

"Be the one, be the one To make my soul and make it undone" At this part, I believe that Tyler is referring to us (his fans) to support him and help him as he has helped us.

"You can bring the fire, I can bring the bones" I'm not too sure what this is about but I think what this means is Tyler referring to his faith meaning if you heal me, I'll bring others so they can be healed too.

"Where we're from, there's no sun Our hometown's in the dark." I think this means that their hometown is poor and just not known (or in his words, in the dark. Also I relate to this because I grew up an hour away from them in Springfield which was voted the saddest city in America twice.)

So overall, I think the message of this song is saying that no matter what you've been/ are going through, you can still beat your fears and insecurities (aka your BlurryFace)

@MessageMan also I feel like I need to add "be the one, be the one To take me home and show me the sun" is referring to the bright side of him, us (the fans) and we make him happy (which is showing him the sun)
