Music Jail, Pt. 1 & 2 Lyrics

Where you going, buddy?
Where you going, buddy?
Where you going, buddy?
Where you going, buddy?
Won't you come with me to music jail?

Where you going, darling?
Where you going, darling?
Where you going, darling?
Where you going, darling?
Won't you come with me to music jail?

Let's form a band
Let's take a stand

Where you going, fella?
Where you going, fella?
Where you going, fella?
Where you going, fella?
Won't you come with me to music jail?

Don't turn away
Why don't you stay?

I was not prepared
To do time, to do time
Frankly, I was scared
About time, about time

I was in a cloud
Everything so loud
Life's a riot
No one's quiet at all

In this music crowd
I'm alone, I'm alone
Just one call allowed
No one's home, no one's home

I am getting pale
Who could post my bail?
Done believing
Dreams of leaving are gone

Cover art for Music Jail, Pt. 1 & 2 lyrics by They Might Be Giants

This is a great song! Or at least, pt 1 is.... I have a theory connecting this song and underrated TMBG b-side, "Welcome To The Jungle". https://songmeanings.com/songs/view/140224/ The jungle is music jail and vice versa. It's all a big symbol for getting in over your head with the music industry. In music jail pt 1, you're excited to start a band but in pt 2, you realized that you weren't prepared for how it would take over your life. What's more is, once you're too far in, people in your life get pushed away. "Where you going fella, buddy, darling," are all people the singer knows who don't want to be around him anymore. Sad! This seems to be a common theme in TMBG songs (Cyclops Rock, Welcome To The Jungle).
