Run Lyrics
I am a human being, capable of doing terrible things.
I am a human being, capable of doing terrible things.

There's lightning striking all over the world.

There's lightning striking all over the world.
There's lightning striking all over the world.
Ooh
I am a human being, capable of doing terrible things.
I am a human being, capable of doing terrible things.

You people are mistaken if you think that I'm awake and celebrating anything that I become.
You people are mistaken if you think that I'm awake and celebrating anything that I become
You people are mistaken if you think that I'm awake and celebrating anything that I become

I think fellow talking about soldiers might be closer to the meaning. But to me this song speaks more to something like a mass shooting. The first half of the song almost seems like a mantra, trying to diminish the narrators actions. "I'm doing this terrible thing, because humans by their very nature are terrible. They deserve it, and I'm just giving in to my inherent nature." Then almost as a further justification. "Doesn't matter who I kill, people are dying to all kinds of random circumstance all over the world."
To me that makes the dramatic shift in the music a very straight forward and obvious image of the shooter drawing and acting. The music is very driving and aggressive, almost systematic and violent.
That still leaves some ambiguity at the end.
"You people are mistaken if you think that" I mean that's what happens after mass shootings right? There's a media frenzy, everyone has their own theories as to why such senseless tragedy took place. There's a need to justify and understand because it's so tragic.
"I'm awake and celebrating anything that I've become." The use of awake here could be implying that the narrator died, or that they are now sedated, imprisoned, or it could even imply some kind of regret. I think the statement here is trying to defy the idea that mass shooters do what they do for attention or fame.
It sounds like he's reflecting on his recent success as an artist, and the amount of influence he now has on people. At the same time he wants to run from all the responsibility.
Might be a bit of a stretch, but I think it's about a [possibly retired] Soldier.
"I am a Human being... Capable of doing terrible things."
"There's lightning striking all over the world."
"You people are mistaken if you think that I'm awake and celebrating anything I've become."
The reason why I'm saying this is pretty out there is because of the phone conversation at the end of the song. If that has ANYTHING to do with the Song's meaning, then all this is thrown off. But regardless, despite that phone conversation, this is how I view the song. There's not much here lyric-wise to work with, three legitimate lines if you ask me; so really everyone's entitled to their own opinion.
