How You Get The Girl Lyrics

Stand there like a ghost, shaking from the rain, rain
She'll open up the door and say are you insane?
Say it's been a long six months,
And you were too afraid to tell her what you want.

And that's how it works,
That's how you get the girl
and then you say

I want you for worse or for better,
I would wait forever and ever,
Broke you heart, I'll put it back together
I would wait forever and ever
And that's how it works,
That's how you get the girl
And that's how it works,
that's how you get the girl.

Remind her how it used to be, be, yeah
With pictures in frames of pictures on cheeks, cheeks
Tell her how you must have lost your mind,
When you left her all alone and never told her why, why

And that's how it works,
That's how you lost the girl
and now you see

I want you for worse or for better,
I would wait forever and ever,
Broke you heart, I'll put it back together
I would wait forever and ever
And that's how it works,
That's how you get the girl
And that's how it works,
that's how you get the girl.
You know,
That I don't want you to go

Remind me how it used to be...
Pictures in frames of kisses on cheeks.
And say you want me
And then you say

I want you for worse or for better,
I would wait forever and ever,
Broke you heart, I'll put it back together
I would wait forever and ever
And that's how it works,
That's how you get the girl
And that's how it works,
that's how you get the girl.
And that's how it works,
that's how you get the girl.
And that's how it works, t
that's how you get the girl.

That's how it works,
that's how you got the girl.

I think that this song is originally perceived as very happy and lovey dovey but when you think about it, it's almost ironic. This guy is the same guy that left her all alone and never told her why, but he's singing about how he messed up. While the idea is cute and romantic, it's a lot darker because this guy did hurt her, and the only thing she has are his words that he'll love her, and guys will say anything. Just a thought lol

This song is soon to become the background track to every guy's proposal/engagement or wedding videos!

The song works as an advice to a guy who wants to get a girlback. She suggests better tactics than the ones her former lovers seemed to have used on her, described in songs like “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together”.

This song explains to you (the listener) how you get The Girl.

Song Fact

"How You Get the Girl": I literally listened to the album four times before I even noticed this song was on here. I forget it almost instantly. It sounds like a buffer episode of "Gilmore Girls," in timeliness and tone and activity. Grade: C

I think there's definitely some sarcasm in this song. The lines "And that's how it works, that's how you get the girl" after each verse are delivered a little bit regretfully, almost with an implied sigh of "yes... that's how it works... that's how you get the girl..."

The fact that the chorus which is repeated has the line "Broke your heart" makes me think that it's important, almost that we need reminding that he screwed up originally.

I think overall this song is supposed to be a critique of the very formulaic Nicholas Sparks-esque romance. The idea that someone can screw up completely but as long as he says something nice and cutesy sounding he gets forgiven in the end and gets what he wants.

The main point of this song is likely to warn about this kind of romance and to avoid falling for a guy who just says nice things when needed just to get what he wants at the time.

In addition, the line in the bridge "And say you want me" probably means that there is/was a guy in Taylor's life who screwed up and that while Taylor knows she needs to move on as a result deep down she would still be willing to take him back in a heartbeat if he did the aforementioned things.

My Interpretation

I love how this song builds,"And that's how it works, that's how you get/lost/got the girl."The first chorus has a good sound, the second chorus has that "wiir wiir wiir",then the third chorus has the prominent background vocals. Ugh! It's so good! This song could've been basic and childish if it weren't for how she sings it. It sounds so heartfelt, especially the part right before each chorus, and the ending just explodes into this chaos of happiness and gratitude that things worked out. I'm also a sucker for acoustic guitar bridges. I could only hope she releases this as a single; I've imagined a video for this too many times for her not to. <3

I think this is her best song and I hope we get a music video out of it.

Though it follows immediately after the very sedate “Wildest Dreams,” “How You Get the Girl” is perhaps the most chipper song on the album. Built over strumming acoustic guitars, it’s also the one that sounds the most like Red. (Or her older material, though—with the now inevitable bleeps and bloops—that’s more of a stretch.) Addressed to a hesitant, unsure lover, the titular method for getting the girl is (spoiler alert!) actually quite old-fashioned: Profess that you’ll love her “For worse or for better … forever and ever.”
