Mother & Father Lyrics
The nights are getting shorter
I don’t know where they go
I am getting older
And it's starting to show
And ever since I left my mother
It’s much harder to know
How to make my own life here
How to make my own home
I don’t want to wake up lonely
I don’t want to just be fine
I don't want to keep on hoping
Forget what I had in mind
I don’t want to wake up lonely
I don’t want to just be fine
I don't want to keep on hoping
Forget what I had in mind
Forget what I had in mind
I remember a time when a kiss on the hand was enough
'Cause we know we were free
And we knew what it meant to be love
But ever since I left my father
It’s much harder to know
How to make my own life here
When all I need is home
I don’t want to wake up lonely
I don’t want to just be fine
I don't want to keep on hoping
Forget what I had in mind
I don’t want to wake up lonely
I don’t want to just be fine
I don't want to keep on hoping
Forget what I had in mind
Forget what I had in mind
This face's is starting to fade
They’re slipping through my hands
It's where my heart was made
And my feet will always land
I don’t want to wake up lonely
I don’t want to just be fine
I don't want to keep on hoping
Forget what I had in mind
I don’t want to wake up lonely
I don’t want to just be fine
I don't want to keep on hoping
Forget what I had in mind
Forget what I had in mind
I don’t want to wake up lonely
I don’t know where they go
I am getting older

A truly relatable song that Broods have done a fantastic job on. I think it's just talking about the fear of growing up, the fear of moving on from childhood, and how scary and confusing and disorienting it can be. The mention of the mother and father as well as home projects an image of childhood memories, and the fact that she can't picture their faces too well "their faces start to fade...they're slipping through my hands" is the horrifying realization that your past is exactly that: the past. You can no longer run to your dad to open the pickle jar, or have your mother take care of you when you're sick. It's a terrifying realization, because you (usually) have no one else to rely on right after you leave your parents, hence the "I don't want to wake up lonely".
It's stepping out into the world, finally alone and independent. And instead of taking the "i'm so confident and ready for this" outlook, Broods have taken the "holy shit this is terrifying" alternative look to the situation, which I think is great, because everyone feels that at least once in their life.
Great track and times nicely with the millennial generation as we come out of carefree youth and face the music... no pun intended.
What I feel this song is portraying is a young woman growing up and facing life. Her mother and father have set certain standards that she would want to live by but at the same time she doesn't want to settle. Trying to understand the difference between getting what she wants but at the same time trying not to settle makes life harder and harder. The more she tries to find out what she wants in life, the more the standards that she was taught to live by fades.
