Say My Name Lyrics
I wanna go
So what'd you say
When you gonna let me know
If you give a damn about me
‘Cause you got my hands tied
In my defense
I always fall for confidence
And your compliments look good on me
Cause nobody knows it better
than the girl in the corner with the scarlet letter
And while you're watching you may think that she doesn't matter
But no one knows you better
I wanna dance
I wanna dance
I wanna dance with you
So take a chance
take a chance
Oh yeah
I need a sign or a signal
I've overthought everything I can think of
Into symbol
I need the coat and your jacket
And the remnants of your cigarette packet
I wanna go
So what'd you say
When you gonna let me know
If you give a damn about me
‘Cause you got my hands tied
In my defense
I always fall for confidence
And your compliments look good on me
Cause nobody knows it better
than the girl in the corner with the scarlet letter
and while you're watching you think that she doesn't matter
but no one knows you better
I wanna dance
I wanna dance
I wanna dance with you
So take a chance
take a chance

To me, the part where she says "nobody knows it better Than the girl in the corner with the scarlet letter" she's talking about some misunderstood girl who sits back and watches everything, but she actually see's you even though you don't see her.
@Listen2Reason THANK YOU everyone keeps ignoring the scarlet letter. It's a key part of the song. The situation may be arguable but it seems to be an unapologetic cheating song. Either the girl with the scarlet letter (who I believe might also be the singer) or the person that she's singing to, or possibly both, want to never mind any other relationship or situation they may be in and just 'dance.' Until the girl with the scarlet letter (justifiably) feels like she's just on the sidelines , pines for more attention, and overthinks everything- "I need a sign or a signal I've overthought everything I can think of into symbol" -even though from the start he has behaved towards her with confidence of their relationship and gives her affection. Perhaps she feels this way because he only behaves this way when they are together. She's left wondering because their dances are few and far between. "When you gonna let me know If you give a damn about me 'Cause you got my hands tied In my defense I always fall for confidence And your compliments look good on me" He has complete control over her.
Watch the video. I want to run away too.
I think this is about someone who is pining for someone else, possibly a friend, and the feelings aren't returned.
They're asking for the person to give them a chance because they feel that feelings would be reciprocated if they do so.
The key to the song for me is the"scarlet letter." This implies that someone has committed adultery. It seems like the singer is the girl in the corner and the guy is pretending he has nothing to hide, but she's begging him to grow a pair and reminding him that she knows the real him.
That's what I got out of it.
The singer and the person she's singing to have already hooked up, while the singer was in a relationship. The subject didn't realize the singer had feelings for the subject (possibly due to the preexisting relationship). I feel like they knew each other beyond their hookup, and she sees the subject as inwardly complicated, despite their projected confidence, and feels like she knows them in ways the social crowd doesn't see.
