California (There Is No End to Love) Lyrics
Bar-Bar-Barbara, Santa Barbara (x10)
California
Then we fell into the shiny sea
The weight that drags your heart down
Well, that's what took me where I need to be
Which is here
Out on Zuma
Watching you cry like a baby
California
At the dawn you thought would never come
But it did
Like it always does
Woah-oh
All I know
And all I need to know is there is no
Yeah, there is no end to love
I didn't call you
Words can scare a thought away
Everyone's a star in our town
It's just your light gets dimmer if you have to stay
In your bedroom
In a mirror
Watching yourself cry
Like a baby
California
Blood orange sunset brings you to your knees
I've seen for myself
There's no end to grief
That's how I know
Woah-oh
That's how I know
And why I need to know that there is no
Yeah, there is no end to love
Woah-oh
All I know
And all I need to know is there no
Yeah, there is no end to love
(There is no end, end to love)
Woah-oh
All I know
And all I need to know is there no
Yeah, there is no end to love
Woah-oh
We come and go
But stolen days you don't get back
Stolen days are just enough
Then we fell into the shiny sea
The weight that drags your heart down
Well, that's what took me where I need to be
Which is here
Out on Zuma
Watching you cry like a baby
At the dawn you thought would never come
But it did
Like it always does
All I know
And all I need to know is there is no
Yeah, there is no end to love
Words can scare a thought away
Everyone's a star in our town
It's just your light gets dimmer if you have to stay
In your bedroom
In a mirror
Watching yourself cry
Like a baby
Blood orange sunset brings you to your knees
I've seen for myself
There's no end to grief
That's how I know
That's how I know
And why I need to know that there is no
Yeah, there is no end to love
All I know
And all I need to know is there no
Yeah, there is no end to love
All I know
And all I need to know is there no
Yeah, there is no end to love
We come and go
But stolen days you don't get back
Stolen days are just enough

When I have heard "California" I thought: this song is about love, beaches, friends and the dream to become a star. The acoustic session of this song is more awesome than the original version. When Bono sings “Everyone’s a star in our town” is about the personal dreams of people who moved there, to try something. Last week in Brazil I saw a video recorded in Acre, near Amazonia, in a most famous avenue in Rio Branco, capital. This song is playing and the sun is falling. Was a amazing view with the orange sunset, like the song. "California" is a hot song to a hot days. In Brazil we got hot days during nine or ten months of the year. Obviously, this is a great song to play on the radio, more than like "Every Breaking Wave" for example. "California" could be part of "Hot To Diasmantle an Atomic Bomb". It Got the same feeling, the same spirit, ideas.
This is a song about death and dying. The setting sun is an obvious metaphor. The singer is reflecting on the grief of a spouse or girlfriend who is mourning the death of a loved one. But the sadness is really an expression of love that continues on even after death. All we have is the stolen days (borrowed time) that we are allotted— but one’s love is eternal.
@monsterwax Couldn’t agree more! The sadness is evident, contrasted by eternal love and yes our days on earth are fixed and allotted to us, we don’t know when they will end but love remains.
