I think Paddy refers to himself in this song, he is the thief in his metaphor. As an artist he feels that he has stolen his art and he is not as genius as we think, lowering God's status and underestimating us, of course.
Like the other poster, I think it's autobiographical, about something he feels is maybe undeserved. But...
I think it's a love song to his family.
