The Voyager Lyrics

By the time I got your letter, I lost my mind
I was tripping
When you getting better? It's a jagged line
Nothing lasts forever when you travel time
I've been sipping that Kool-Aid at the Cosmos

'Cause the voyager's in every boy and girl
If you wanna get to heaven, get out of this world
The voyager's in every boy and girl

When it finally hit me, I did not cry
'Cause I was at the 7-11 flipping through the New York Times
I saw it printed in black and white
The voyager goes up in smoke

The voyager's in every boy and girl
If you wanna get to heaven, get out of this world
You're the voyager
You're the voyager

You scared me straight, right into your arms
Uh oh oh, uh oh oh oh, uh oh oh, uh oh oh oh, uh oh oh

The voyager's in every boy and girl
If you wanna get to heaven, get out of this world
You're the voyager
You're the voyager, hey
You're the voyager
I'm the voyager

This song is a tricky one... Again, going with the theme of the Rabbit Fur Coat album, I think there is a little bit of religious undertones in this song: "If you wanna get to heaven, get out of this world" this can have a couple of different meanings but what I think is that this world is definitely not heaven and in order to get there you have to get the hell out of here (or that you have to die first). There is too much bad in this world to get to heaven from here.
Jenny wrote this album while battling insomnia and was often up at night watching Carl Sagan's "Cosmos" series. She even mentions the cosmos in the song. So what I think she is saying that there is a little bit of a voyager in everyone which means there is a little bit in everyone that can leave this world and get to heaven :) Totally could be wrong there so please COMMENT. Would love to hear your thoughts

@wannabepoet What you said, Poet, that was one of my first thoughts about this song but I think it has a different meaning most likely. I totally believe it has religious undertones but I believe the voyager is "getting lost in something" such as a book or good tv show or video game or anything. It's possible it could mean death though. I just don't think so .. especially in her new music.

This is a great song. Really awesome to hear Jenny again (Acid Tongue being a departure of the good, imoho). But yeah, the Voyager is in all of us. We all have the potential to "get out of this world" and we all will eventually. But I think this song is concerned with life also; more specifically the quality of life. Life is the journey, the voyage. Nice space imagery fits the context and interstellar recording as well.

My Opinion

It's about finding out her father is terminally ill then dealing with his subsequent death and realizing she herself is mortal.

@boooobaaaa where did u get this information? how do you know this was the original meaning? just wondering?

The Voyager is a spacecraft BTW

It's about trying and failing. Adventure and the loneliness that results. Wannabepoet is Jenny Lewis trying to get free feedback on her writing. Heeyah! Fantastic lyrics and vocal interpretation.
