Toes Lyrics
Welcome to my zoo
Put your head inside
My big black wild while
I can still help you
Funky, chic and smooth
Honey can you spy
The divine ape-swine
'Cause he can see you
My hands are twisted, too
Five fingers to black hooves
I'm a man, don't spin me a lie
Got toes and I can smile
I'm crooked but upright
Is just a little love
I said in purrs under the palms
And all I ever want is breaking me apart
I said to the thing that I once was
My hands are twisted too
Five fingers to black hooves
I'm a man, don't spin me a lie
Got toes and I can smile
I'm crooked but upright
Underneath the moon
By the thick tan sand
And the tall thin grass
One more thing for you
In the sleepy dunes
Makes my nerves clench close
And my bones go cold
When I see that room
Is just a little love
I said in purrs under the palms
And all I ever want
Is breaking me apart
My hands are twisted too
Five fingers, to black hooves
I'm a man, don't spin me a lie
Got toes and I can smile
I'm crooked but upright
I think the lyrics refer to mans animal desires and the beguiling approach to seduction thats clearly visible to other men. "See the snake-baboon Funky, chic and smooth Honey can you spy, The divine ape-swine Cause he can see you."
Asking whether she can see what he sees. Then the chorus I'm a man, I'm a twisted fool My hands are twisted, too
explaining how he sees how mans behviour is almost devlish Five fingers to black hooves Again being a man with wicked desires hooves like the devil
I'm a man, don't spin me a lie Got toes and I can smile I'm crooked but upright
again talking about how men know how men think, dont lie i know whats really going on
just my thoughts
This is about a boy coming of age and to terms with his sexuality. (dipping his toes in)
The narrator is his devil consciousness. (the angel/devil duality).
The song begins with humming that alludes to slave spirituals. This seems to indicate the subject's slavery to his sexuality.
The boy realizes that as a man, his desires are devilish or even twisted and evil. Even as he watches and interacts with women he must hide his wild and evil intentions and desires. He says he's after a little love, but in reality he is tempted to love by the possibility he can satisfy the monster inside of him.
Briefly put, it's about devilish lust. The duality of masculine sexual desire. Having to be a chivalrous gentlemen outwardly, but a twisted wild animal inside. And more than anything, hiding that from the world.
Another way this can be viewed is as an ode to kinky SDM.
In that version the narrator is a Dom showing a new boy/man to the lifestyle. Without explaining in more detail than is publicly appropriate, there are a number of ways this explanation fits more readily. Though the specific details are incredibly explicit so I won't get into them.
If you like this song, just know it's overtly sexual and there's no doubt that it discusses extreme lust.
Along with this, the album is composed of songs that invoke a jungle atmosphere. This one seems to recall the Island of Dr. Moreau. The imagery is still solid as a sexually charged metaphor.

Anyway beautifully twisted song.
Anyway beautifully twisted song.
I think this means it shows us that our own desires aren't what we even understand. I see the song as someone who sees something he desires but understands that his concept of love is flawed, hes a man, a twisted fool. His hands are twisted (they've done dispicable things) five fingers (as you see them) but my intentions are evil, cause im only man. All I ever want is love and all I ever want is breaking me apart. Im a man dont spin me a lie, got toes and I can smile. (You see me for the intentions I am showing). Im crooked but upright (I you see me as a good person, but im evil).
I think the song shows us who we really are when we get rid of the BS and admit that we want what we want and no one is going to tell us different.
I think the lyrics here are probably incorrect. "Five fingers to black hooves" doesn't make much sense, considering it implies a transformation of one human hand into hooves (plural) It makes much more sense heard as "Five fingers, two black hooves" Implying that he has five on one hand, but also has a pair of hooves, which he presumably walks on.
Y'all never tripped acid, not familiar with who Baphomet is??
The band themselves said that their song was supposed to be a sonic interpretation of The Island of Dr. Moreau. Which, if you are unsure of the film, it’s a Sci Fi movie about a man being trapped on an island with a mad scientist who makes half human beasts. With the context of the lyrics, it seems to be in the point of view of one of Dr. Moreau’s half beast creations. The lyrics describe the character as crooked and hooved. Perhaps being upright and having toes can be figurative and the beast’s way of clarifying that he’s human and just wants “a little love.”
Or, it could be from the point of view of Dr. Moreau, the evil scientist that creates the beasts themselves. The hooves could represent him being evil, and he’s mentally crooked yet physically upright. It would also make more sense as he opens with “welcome to my zoo”, as in his laboratory. Perhaps this song is Dr. Moreau speaking to the man that’s trapped on the island with him, introducing him to his beastly creations. Such as the snake-baboon, who he believes is “funky chic and smooth”, indicating he’s proud of his creation.
But, of course, songs are relative and open to interpretation.
To me it seems like a father talking to his new born son about coming into this world before its to late for him to teach his son the what he knows.\n\n"Put your hands down boy." -While coddling my son up I am always asking him to put his arms down so I can wrap him up cozily.\n\n"Welcome to my zoo"- Literally just welcome to this messed up world\n\n"put your head inside my big black wild" -My partner spent few hours in labor, but still it seemed like our son just didn\'t want to come out from the warmth.\n\n"while I can still help you" - I\'m a 32 year old gentleman now, and even though that is young anything could happen and I might not be around long enough to tach my son everything I have perceived in this world so far. \n\n"See the snake-baboon"- I believe this is the other people may have seen when he first came out the womb. the Doctor and nurses all lied to us about when he was coming out to trick my partner to push harder. this could also just be anyone the father does not trust.\n\nFunky, chic and smooth" possibly the description of those snake baboons. how they seem to be, but its a trap!\n\n"Honey can you spy" - can you see, can you decipher the difference between.\nThe divine ape-swine?- this could be the father describing the mother and father as the divine being in the Childs life at this point in time. the givers of sustenance and love.\n\n"Cause he can see you"- I am a new father and I am always staring and thinking of my boy now, and I can always see him perfectly in my mind. he is perfect to me!\n\n"I\'m a man, I\'m a twisted fool\nMy hands are twisted, too\nFive fingers to black hooves\nI\'m a man, don\'t spin me a lie\nGot toes and I can smile\nI\'m crooked but upright" -this is the father description. a conflicted person able to do good or evil and can tell the difference between the two.\n\n"To the left now, boy\nUnderneath the moon\nBy the thick tan sand\nAnd the tall thin grass\nOne more thing for you"- This is the father guiding his son out of the womb. kind of graphic but it was amazing and wonderful.\n\n"See the distant flume\nIn the sleepy dunes\nMakes my nerves clench close\nAnd my bones go cold\nWhen I see that room" -The father asking his son if he sees the light at the end of the womb where he has slept for 9 months. 42 weeks in our case. and the room truly is not a happy place to be in.\n\n"And all I ever want\nIs just a little love\nI said in purrs under the palms\nAnd all I ever want\nIs breaking me apart" -Possibly the father saying all I wanted was to feel good for a moment, you know sex. and knowing your behavior is natural and yet you have to maintain and control it can really cause a person to suffer and feel twisted.
I think this song is based on two books, The Island of Dr. Moreau and Heart of Darkness. This song is a narration from the perspective of a half goat-man who is stuck on an island. He has a Willy Wonka type personality, so big and flamboyant to disguise what’s really going on. The song opens up with jungle sounds to give the feel of a dense jungle around you, and then the goat-man starts talking. He tells the boy that this is his ‘zoo,’ and that he is going to help him around. He shows him to other animals, including a snake-baboon and an ape-swine (pig). The boy is clearly freaked out, and the goat-man calms him down. He says even though his hands are hooves, he’s still a man because he has toes and can smile. The bridge switches to a different perspective- a cat-man. He is talking about how all the lack of love love, and his memories from his old life are breaking him apart. Then it goes back to the goat-mans perspective, talking about the lab where they were turned into mutants. The song ends with the bridge repeated again, further emphasizing their mistreatment.
