Unsteady Lyrics

Hold, hold on, hold onto me
'Cause I'm a little unsteady
A little unsteady
Hold, hold on, hold onto me
'Cause I'm a little unsteady
A little unsteady

Mama, come here
Approach the pier
Daddy, I'm alone
'Cause this house don't feel like home

If you love me, don't let go
If you love me, don't let go

Hold, hold on, hold onto me
'Cause I'm a little unsteady
A little unsteady
Hold, hold on, hold onto me
'Cause I'm a little unsteady
A little unsteady

Mother, I know that you're tired of being alone
Dad, I know you're trying to fight
When you feel like flying

But if you love me, don't let go
If you love me, don't let go

Hold, hold on, hold onto me
'Cause I'm a little unsteady
A little unsteady
Hold, hold on, hold onto me
'Cause I'm a little unsteady
A little unsteady

Hold, hold on, hold onto me
'Cause I'm a little unsteady
A little unsteady

It has a different meaning depending on your life's experience. At this moment, my son is in prison for drug charges. He has fought this addiction for 25 years and relapses every 7 years or so. He is an intelligent, hard working, talented man who struggles every day he breathes and would sometimes "just stop breathing" so it is my job and duty to pray for him and NOT LET GO, because he is a little unsteady and I am as well. This is a family disease and his entire family has to hold on. I listen every day as I write to him or pray for him. Although very heart rending, it reminds me that all I have to do is HOLD ON

My Interpretation

@jparis Wow! I never thought of it this way!.. but thank you for sharing that. I myself am a recovering addict. Been sober 3 years now, but my brother on the other hand hasnt found his way yet. Off and on now for 20+ years he has been in and out of jail and destroying himself. I totally agree when you say its a family disease. Addiction effects the person afflicted by it and everyone around him/her. Family for sure especially their parents (most of the time mom) This is such a great song and so many meanings. I am going...

@jparis thanks for sharing your personal life with us, and this song seems to fit perfectly your situation at the moment (coming from your son's point of view).

I think this song is about a family that is breaking apart as one and that is what is making him weaker and weaker as he say "I'm a little unsteady" plus this verse:

"Mama, come here Approach, appear Daddy, I'm alone 'Cause this house don't feel like home"

I think what that means is that this person in this case would be his mom, comes home and leaves which makes him feel empty as he also said "cause this house don't feel like home" because without his parents even being home, home isn't home.

It can completely be about something else but as stately cleary, he's talking to his mom and dad.

My Opinion

@mao1118868 definitely gives the impression of dysfunctional family, that perhaps is falling apart (divorce??)

I think the use of the word "unsteady" seems like a double meaning. on one facet it is a child... think a toddler who cant walk without holding his parents hands because he's wobbly... a picture of youth. on another side it shows the family breaking apart. They are unstable and causing the child distress.

This is such a powerful song to me. Firstly, I relate to the addiction side because I am a recovering addict. I know how using/drinking can make a family "a little unsteady". Still living with my parents at age 26 because all my money was spend on drugs! I am 3 years sober now, married and have moved out of state with my husband (I should tell you I am a mama and daddys baby)... ANYWAY... On with my interpretation of this very emotional song. It makes me think of my mom and remember my dad. My dad passed away May last year. I still lived in Louisiana then. He was sick in the hospital, that was actually the first place my husband met my dad. (Not married then: he got to ask for my hand in marriage before he passed) "Dad, I know you're trying to fight when you feel like flying. But if you love me, don't let go" I wanted my daddy to stay longer! So many things left to say and do; he needed to walk me down the isle! On that day my mom called, as soon as I answered I knew that was it. "Hold on to me, cause Im a little unsteady". I felt like I couldnt go on without my dad! How do you deal with losing someone who is such an import part of your life? And my mom, what will she do now?.. I cant imagine her pain and heartache. Not to mention just 6 months later her live in daughter moves across the United States soon after the wedding. "Mother, I know that your tired of being alone", "Mama, come here, approach, appear". My mom is a very strong woman but I know that since the house is empty now that dad is gone and I have moved away she gets lonely and sad at times. I wished she could be closer to me or me to her. "Im alone cause this house dont feel like home". Makes me miss home and I think of my mom saying that to my dad in heaven. No one is there with her so it doesnt feel like it used to. "Hold on to me cause Im a little unsteady". If it werent for this awesome man in my life I call my husband I dont know how I would have made it threw the loss of my dad. He has held me steady and been at my side threw it all. (Added bonus- him and my dad are both named Albert, strange I know. Even more strange, my mom says that she thinks my dad has partially-reincarnated himself into my husband. They favor that much! They always say a girl marrys a man just like a father.) Many tears fall EVERYTIME I listen to this song cause so many emotions come up. I love listening to it though because it brings back memories. If you made it to the end of this post thank you for reading it all. Its alot but its just one little story of my life I wanted to share.

I think this is a song that can mean different things to different people. My mom died almost 2 years ago. It was pretty quick. She had cancer and it consumed her in a matter of a few weeks. My dad completely lost his mind. He ran to his ex wife who he hasn't seen in 40 years and left me with everything. He blamed me for everything he could. He said things to me that you don't say to your kinds. He got married to his ex wife and bought a house 4 hours away. He left me with the house to empty when he listed it for sale, he left me with 2 dogs. I had to buy a house cause we thought his house was sold. I was 25 years old and I had just graduated college with still my shitty retail job that now I can't quit because I wont find anything that pays enough for me and the house and the 2 dogs.

This song reminds me of all of that. I didn't want my parents to let go but they did. I go to my dads house now and it doesn't feel like home. And I want my mom back so bad. There were times I felt like I was unsteady and I went through all this alone. But I made it out alive. As sad at this song is, it also reminds me that I made it through all of that. It makes me feel strong. It reminds me that things will get better, that when you hit bottom, there is only one way to go.

@kiera76109 sorry for your loss and thanks for sharing such a personal story with us. I am glad that this song is able to relate to you ... hopefully it brings up nice memories of your mother.

@kiera76109 You ARE Strong, my friend. Never doubt yourself.

I realize this song was primarily intended to be about divorce. However, when I listen to it I think about going through an eating disorder. On the inside I desperately wanted help and wanted my parents to not give up, but but on the outside it was tearing us apart. Also, as someone mentioned, the words "I'm a little unsteady" can have a double meaning (unsteady emotionally, and for me, weak and sick from not eating). That's why I think it is such a beautiful and meaningful song, because it can apply to many different tough circumstances that families go through.

This song is a prayer for me to God these days because im a little unsteady. It is such a beautiful song.

The verses Mama, come here Approach, appear Daddy, I'm alone 'Cause this house don't feel like home

Mother, I know That you're tired of being alone Dad, I know you're trying To fight when you feel like flying

My dad died when i was really young and my mom was on drugs for periods of time during my childhood.

My Interpretation

STAY STRONG AND DO NOT GIVE UP CHRIST IS YOUR FATHER AND YOU ARE "HIS" CHILD DO NOT FORGET THAT

Cover art for Unsteady lyrics by X Ambassadors

This song has been a very powerful part of the healing of the lose of my mother. I believe the song is about a child reaching out to his/her parents for help because they are as the song says "a little unsteady".

Mama, come here Approach, appear Daddy, I'm alone 'Cause this house don't feel like home

In this verse the child is calling out to their father for an emotional support system, stating that with out his/her mother he is alone in the world and he needs someone.

Mother, I know That you're tired of being alone Dad, I know you're trying To fight when you feel like flying

This verse seems to be explaining the family problems, as if the child is saying "mother I know daddy isn't here but he is trying." even if this isn't the truth the child is trying to reassure the mother that it will be okay and that he/she is there for the mother.

My Opinion

This song hits home for me.

The first half reminds me of being a young teenager. My parents went from happily married, to my mother abusing drugs and leaving. Mama come here, approach, appear. We lived in a house that no longer felt like home. My dad stayed and took care of us, but he worked a lot and I was alone a lot to care for my younger brother like a mother.

The second half is my now. My mother is now alone in a nursing home, and although it's her own fault, I know she's tired of being alone. My dad now has congestive heart failure, and he's trying to still fight when he probably feels like flying.

But if they love me they won't let go.....Cause I'm still a little Unsteady.

I cry every time I hear this song. I'd like to ask the writer of this song what he truly wrote it about.
But this is my take on it.

This song really touches my heart because it reminds me of how I grew up. My parents separated when I was 11. I live with my mom, and my dad went off and got remarried. I went over to my dads every other weekend and it never felt like home to me, "this house don't feel like home" the other people walking in and out of the house, I just always felt uncomfortable. "Mother I know you're tired of feeling alone" My mom felt alone and started dating but stopped quickly after. "Daddy I know you're trying to fight when you feel like flying", I'm the only one of the 3 children who would be consistent with seeing my dad, so it would be easier for him to leave us and not have anything to do with our lives because he was constantly fighting with my mother about every aspect of my life. "If you love me, don't let go." I always felt unsteady and alone growing up because I was in the middle of my parents' fights and I would be the messager. I never understood why they would go through me to speak when all it did was complicate my life. "Hold on to me. Because I'm a little unsteady."
