Circles Lyrics

you know the fires burning low
can you feel the flame, the fading glow?
you know we are slowing down
I can hear your footsteps drowning out.

(chorus):
we're burning out, we're burning down
we're the ashes on the ground
we're burning out, we're burning down
we're falling underground

you are, you're singing our song
but your heart is somewhere else I know
we are, we're trying to belong
pick up the pieces left of us

(chorus)

If you could see me running after you
you know I'll be running in circles round you
If we could turn the hours back in time
you know I'll be running in circles for you

(chorus)

the light has fallen from the stars
now we are sinking through the night
out of sight we've fallen under ground
pick up the pieces left of us

If you could see me running after you
you know I'll be running in circles round you
If we could turn the hours back in time
you know I'll be running in circles for you

(chorus) x2

You know the fire's running low

This song is about a dying love. The first verse juxtaposes the image of a fire burning out, to Greta not being able to hear someone's footsteps anymore anymore. This makes me think either someone is distancing themselves from her, or she feels like she is unable to communicate with them. Then more specifically she says "we're burning out, we're burning down we're the ashes on the ground." This means they are barely what they once were, and soon, like ashes they will be nothing.

Ok so I am a single mom with three children in their 30’s. It was a very hard row to hoe- but I don’t have one regret- my children are successful- and although I did not have time to really get to know them, I did spend my all in preparing them, and NOW I am getting to know them. I am also an orthodox Christian- so this song has two meanings for me- the first is rooted in my worldview. We’re burning out we’re burning down, We’re the ashes on the ground “ It’s haunting. It’s an affirmation of our mortality- yes I must see that my life has an end- it is soon- is that negative? No- but it’s real, and that drives me all the more to action. “‘‘Tis only one life, twill soon be past, only what’s done for Christ will last!” For all our striving- is it for Christ? If so we will recieve our crown. If 15 or 57- we’re burning out we’re burning down. We have one chance, and then- eternity.

“If we could turn the hours back in time you know- I’ll be running in circles for you”

ThIs is me speaking to my children now- helping them to see that I was and am running in circles for them- I gave my all and now pray for them- I spent my life to set them free. This is my meaning.

Enjoy this beautiful song sung by a soulful voice to effect your eternity!

My Interpretation

@CirCles2, that’s so beautifully stated. Yes, I feel the combination of Einaudi’s composition and Greta’s vocal is too powerful to be about a single human relationship. It feels much more cosmic. There’s more transmitted here than the words and music would belie. Much more. A mother’s love, her own measure of mortality — that’s closer to the truth. Whether her love or His, there’s truth in all of it.
