Think fast,
Why do you believe we're on the
Right track?
Anyone can see it when they
Look back,
But tryin' to tell the future isn't quite so easy.

Zoom out,
Everyone's so focused on the
Right now,
No one wants to take a chance on
Somehow,
The dreamers and the schemers
They can both agree,
No one's in between.

Three, five, eight, ten,
I can write this song again!
Eighteen more times,
I'm not running out of rhymes.
Twenty more or forty-two,
'Til you finally see the truth:
It's not me, it's you!

Easy, happy, light and fun,
We can make the number one.
Seven writers get a chunk,
That's how modern music's done!
Wonder why it's down on tubes?
Guess you haven't heard the news:
It's not me, it's you!

Come down,
Try to take it back to when you
First found
Something worth believing in, your
Heart pounds,
Back when you were dreaming of the guts and glory.

Time's up,
Smile and pack it in because I've
Had enough.
I'll wake up tomorrow, and you
Know what?
I'll be satisfied
That I could write my story,
Even glory-free.

Three, five, eight, ten,
I can write this song again!
Eighteen more times,
I'm not running out of rhymes.
Twenty more or forty-two,
'Til you finally see the truth:
It's not me, it's you!

Easy, happy, light and fun,
We can make the number one.
Seven writers get a chunk,
That's how modern music's done!
Wonder why it's down on tubes?
Guess you haven't heard the news:
It's not me, it's you!

Now,
Don't turn around,
We're all work-bound
And not afraid of what we've found.

Then,
In the end,
We'll transcend,
And not just pretend...

Three, five, eight, ten,
I can write this song again!
Eighteen more times,
I'm not running out of rhymes.
Twenty more or forty-two,
'Til you finally see the truth:
It's not me, it's you!

Easy, happy, light and fun,
We can make the number one.
Seven writers get a chunk,
That's how modern music's done!
Wonder why it's down on tubes?
Guess you haven't heard the news:
It's not me, it's you!

Three, five, eight, ten,
I can write this song again!
Eighteen more times,
I'm not running out of rhymes.
Twenty more or forty-two,
'Til you finally see the truth:
It's not me, it's you!

Easy, happy, light and fun,
We can make the number one.
Seven writers get a chunk,
That's how modern music's done!
Wonder why it's down on tubes?
Guess you haven't heard the news:
It's not me, it's you!

Both as a standalone and as part of the DSOTS album, you can take this lyric as read. As a matter of public record, Jourgensen's drug intake was legendary even in the 1980s. By the late 90s, in his own words, he was grappling with massive addiction issues and had lost almost everything: friends, spouse, money and had nearly died more than once. "Dark Side of the Spoon" is a both funny & sad title for an album made by a musical genius who was losing the plot; and this song is a message to his fans & friends saying he knows it. It's painful to listen to so I'm glad the "Keith Richards of industrial metals" wised up and cleaned up. Well done sir.

The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.

Overall about difficult moments of disappointment and vulnerability. Having hope and longing, while remaining optimistic for the future. Encourages the belief that with each new morning there is a chance for things to improve. The chorus offers a glimmer of optimism and a chance at a resolution and redemption in the future. Captures the rollercoaster of emotions of feeling lost while loving someone who is not there for you, feeling let down and abandoned while waiting for a lover. Lost with no direction, "Now I'm up in the air with the rain in my hair, Nowhere to go, I can go anywhere" The bridge shows signs of longing and a plea for companionship. The Lyrics express a desire for authentic connection and the importance of Loving someone just as they are. "Just in passing, I'm not asking. That you be anyone but you”
