(Need I remind you that this is only my interpretation, everyone is subject to their own opinions)

I think that this song is about the persona's broken life with her broken partner. They have both lost themselves in the midst of their lives and thus they have succumbed to alcohol (and minor substance) abuse and to using sex as a coping mechanism. In short, the theme is the desire to feel wanted.

"Please wrap your drunken arms around me / And I'll let you call me yours tonight / 'Cause slightly broken's just what I need"

"And if you give me what I want / Then I'll give you what you like"

"Emotions aren't that hard to borrow / When love's the word you never learned"

Her alcoholic partner is emotionally detached, broken, probably from the lack of love he received from his young age. He doesn't know how to love, and while guiding himself in his adulthood alone, he lost himself in the world of alcoholism and sex. So, he's as desperate as the girl to have her body.

"When you turn off the lights / I get stars in my eyes / Is this love? / Maybe someday"

She thinks that she herself doesn't know what is love so she needs someone who's just as broken as her to understand. I think that she's confused between love and lust. This can be also from the lack of attention in her life just like her partner, or it can also be because her previous partner was a dick and she was lied to. Either way.

"Is it love? / Maybe one day"

She has/just experienced heartbreak (possibly from her inability to love, or because of her previous partner), and she needs some reassurances that she's not alone, even if she's aware that it's just false hope. While the guy is desperate for a release, she's desperate to be reassured, so she's willing to give her body to her partner despite the fact that she knows that the sex is just merely sex without emotions behind it. Nonetheless, she still holds onto the little hope that her partner could still love.

"So don't turn on the lights / I'll give you what you like"

In the middle of that desperation, she loves the feeling of not being alone during her time with her partner, and that is enough for her to feel like she doesn't want to ever leave the moment only to be met with the harsh reality.

"And in a room of empty bottles / If you don't give me what I want / Then you'll get what you deserve"

They have both turned to alcohol, most likely because she follows his lead. She says that he should give her what she wants seeing as she the only who is still there with him through it all — even if they don't communicate much and only interact with sex — when he deserves to be alone for how emotionless he is.

"I'll give you what you like / I'll give you one last chance to hold me / If you give me one last cigarette / By now it's only in the morning / Now that I gave you what you want / All I want is to forget"

They both revel in each other's presence because it's easy and no feelings are involved. This may be because each of them has found comfort while caving into substance abuse (nicotine addiction is also considered as substance abuse). Soon in the morning though, reality catches up with the girl and she begins to wallow in her world of sadness. No matter how many reassurances that she gets, she's still stuck and she wants to forget it all again, which results in the repeating cycle.

"I've got this scene in my head / I'm not sure how it ends / Is it love? / Maybe one day"

The girl probably has vivid imaginations about living a happy life but she's not sure if she can have the life and the love she craves so she stops imagining because she feels love. She questions whether she will ever feel love but she's not putting much hope on it. This can explain as to why she still sticks around with her partner.

I'm pretty sure I'm wrong but I don't know, this is just my opinion and I tend to get dramatic, so..

This song is about a prostitute searching for love. The men in her life come get what they want and leave.

I think she's in lack of love, the only way she found to feel loved is to give her body to the person whom she cherishes even if that person doesn't love her, unless when she's drunk and unconscious. Maybe it's a person she always loved but it was never the same way for him, or just a random person but I don't really think it can be that. I don't know why, but I somehow recongnize myself between the lines that's why I see that this way.

Sometimes we're so desperate that we choose to listen what we want instead of what is true, "Or lie and say at least tonight" means that she just wants to hear him saying that, that's what she WANTS, she wants to feel important for him, at least once a night and the only way she took for that was passin night with him while he's drunk, so he can't be rude and do what she tells him in purpose to give him what he "likes" I mean Sex.

"Is it love, maybe someday"

By this sentence, I think she hopes that her sex relation with that person can evolve to a love relationship one day maybe, I feel like a little desperate hope in her voice while singing this line. She's probably liying to herself, telling herself that if she gives him her body, he could love her someday "maybe"

She knows that this relation can't fullfill the hole she feels in her broken heart, but keeps going on, 'cause she feels loved in few hours.

When I hear this song I think about Erotica and Sex between two people. In the beginning of the song Avril says: "Please wrap your drunken arms around me" Her mate probably drunk.

"Please tell me I'm your one and only Or lie and say at least tonight" I think that it's kind of a Fling. She want her parther to say shes the one and only, but she don't really care if he means that or not.

"And if you give me what I want Then I'll give you what you like" sign of attraction. She wants his body.

Turn off the lights- during the sex. She don't know if it's love or not, but she wants him badly.

"Emotions aren't that hard to borrow When was the word you never learned" I think she means that she wants his emotions and love. Maybe in his past he was lacked of love, and he don't know how to show her enough love.

"And in a room of empty bottles" they may be both drunk.

She gives him the chance to be with her this night, she granted her body for him. right now it's morning, after the night. when she says "all I want is to forget" It could be a couple of meanings: 1.Maybe she wants to forget that night.

2. Maybe she wants to forget her past and enjoy for one night.

I think that the girl who is talking in this song is a lack of love. She's feeling bad and wants some comfort. The man who she is talking to is familiar, maybe an ex boyfriend, he is drunk, as she is, and we can notice that the alcohol is omnipresent in the song. The relationship is physical and it lasts only for one night. She is not sure about her feelings, and he is empty in love. The lyrics are very sensual, as Avril's voice and I think this song is awesome. This type of music really fits to her voice, I truly enjoy it.

The song is about filling the void of loneliness with casual sex and drinking. She is sleeping with someone who is drunk because she is lonely, and the physical intimacy is her “brand new cure”.

/When you turn off the lights, I get stars in my eyes. Is this love?/ She is asking herself if what she is feeling is love and is confusing sex with real emotions. This is the theme throughout the chorus.

In my opinion, this song is about suffering from loneliness. It does not have to involve such an intimate encounter, but maybe just an emotional connection. She is searching for someone to fill the void that was never filled before. When she sings of the empty bottles it makes me think of her trying to end her life unless the void within her is feeled. She is so desperate to escape the darkness of her mind that she is willing to do anything just to feel love.

In my eyes, I see her saying, just tell me that you want me and I will be anyone you want me to be. I will try whatever I can to please you even if it means wearing a mask to keep you with me. Turning off the lights prevents people from being seen or notice keeping them in the dark of what the truth really is not only to her but to others. Unfortunately, when morning comes the light reveals the secrets she tried to keep hidden. Now she dwells in shame because of the lies to keep her identity and issues at bay.

I know it does not make much sense, but to me it has a deeper more different meaning.

When I first heard this song I remember it sounding pretty sexy, but now it only makes me sad as I can identify with it too much.

From my perspective, it's all about a woman who's craving affection and trying to get what she craves through sex.

She seems very aware of the (presumably) man's real intentions. She's trading her body (what he likes) for a quick fix for her loneliness (what she wants).

"When you turn off the lights I get stars in my eyes Is this love? Maybe someday I've got this scene in my head I'm not sure how it ends Is it love? Maybe one day So don't turn on the lights I'll give you what you like"

A hopeless romantic, she really wants to believe it is more than just a hookup, but she knows it is only that, so she wants the moment to last for as long as possible.

So what I got from this is that:

Its about a girl who wants affection, to feel loved; she doesn't care if the person isn't perfect or even if the affection that she gets is genuine. Perhaps she met someone (or is with someone: fwb) and she knows all they want from her is sex and she's willing to go through with that just to feel like some one loves her.

I think this part is basically like when she's in the fantasy and she knows it isn't real but some where deep inside she is hoping that maybe... just maybe it could be something

Towards the end of the song reminds me of the morning after... She knows it wasn't real and that the fantasy is over, she's all alone again hence:

"By now it's only in the morning Now that I gave you what you want All I want is to forget"
