The Only One Lyrics

Did all the words I never said hurt as bad as those I did?
You know I never even cared, not before you.
If I could go and turn back time; if I could only press rewind
I would bleed this heart of mine, just to show you

And I'll be the first to say I'm sorry; first to say I'm stupid
Why do I always take it there?
Is it hopeless or maybe you still want to meet me at the altar,
And I will lay it all to bear?

And I told you all my secrets; all my fears, I've let go.
And it's flawless, you are the only one,
You are the only one, don't you know?

Am I fading from your mind? Has the distance blurred the lines?
They say all things heal with time but it's untrue
I will linger on every word, I know it's more than I deserve
Chances are I'll make it worse, but I need to

Tell you, tell you that I'm sorry, tell you that I'm stupid,
Why do I always take it there?
Is it hopeless or maybe you still want to meet me at the altar?
And I will lay it all to bear?

And I told you all my secrets,
All my fears, I've let go
And it's flawless, you are the only one,
You are the only one, don't you know?

Don't you know, the hardest part's not having you to hold
Don't you know, this old heart of mine can't bear to see you go

Cover art for The Only One lyrics by James Blunt

She has captured his heart, soul and he feels she is "the one" she has broken his heart even after he shared everything with her. He questions the things he shared and the dreams they talked about together but even when he was not sharing his emotions with her it may have been something important in end to her. He is begging to go back and change things if it was an option.

My Interpretation

@regina1173

My interpretation is he is acknowledging that things that were not done (or said) may have been more hurtful to her than anything that was verbalised. In the first line: “Did all the words I never said, Hurt as bad as those I did”?

He says he never cared before, so it’s as if this encounter has changed him and opened his heart and soul on a level like not before, and may have initiated some sort of transformation. Perhaps he wasn’t anticipating such an encounter and then handled it by taking it for granted or ignoring it...
