Sometimes You're the Hammer, Sometimes You're the Nail

I think this is just about a person (probably just personally coming from Jeremy/the band) who just feels put down for being who he is. I think it's just about not being afraid to stand up for yourself and that you should stand up for others and don't be a bully. My favorite quote from this song and one of my favorites from the album is " Cast your stones, cast your judgement, you don't make me who I am". He means that people may think things about you because they don't understand you or your values, but you know who you are and that can't be taken away from you c:

I think this song is about someone who falling apart and they want to make things right, but they don't want people to help them once they fall. They want help before they fall.

I think it's about being in a relationship where the other person keeps belittling u and treating u like shit and he's going to stand up for himself and not going to take it anymore. Yeah he might be lonely at the end of it all and he knows he's not a perfect person but he deserves so much better and has to much self respect to let it go on. And for any1 going threw the same thing but is to afraid to speak up for them selves he will speak up for you.

i think its about a kid who keeps on getting bullied and is sorta an outcast and doesn't want to lose there dignity so he stands up for himself in the wrong way by getting into a fight gets dragged to the principals office the school thinks the kid hit the bully first randomly and the kid tells the principal:

I reserve my right to feel uncomfortable reserve my right to be afraid. I make mistakes and I am humbled every step of the way. I want to be a better person. I wanna know the master plan. Cast your stones, cast your judgement, you don't make me who I am.

then the kid says: God help those who help themselves, and forget about everyone else. You lost your nerve, you missed the point. God help those with open hands, may they never feel burden again. Ya I'll stand up for those who can't. I'll close the distance. it means the kid will stand up for others being bullied and that someone should help those kids and forget about the other people (the bullys, or at least do something about it)

I think the title simply could be translated into: sometimes you're the one who needs to help others, sometimes you're the one who needs to get helped by others. In this case the Hammer is someone strong who can support the weak one (the nail).

Otherwise, it could also mean that the Hammer is the one who puts someone else (the nail) down, buy bullying him or anything else. So the title means that, eventhough you are a "strong" Hammer who is bullying others, you always could end up becoming a nail who gets bullied by a hammer, so never treat people in a bad way.

Having watched this personally happen to someone I care about, \nI believe this is about being too kind and leading yourself to be taken advantage of, leeches will take everything they can from you if you let that happen, you have to stand up for yourself, it doesn\'t make you any less kind of decent by trying to keep some things for you, whether that be your mental health or your finances.\nYou\'re allowed to feel the way you feel, because it\'s not easy bearing all the weight.
