"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him.
There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.
And hey darling, I hope you're good tonight
And I know you don't feel right when I'm leaving
Yeah, I want it, but no, I don't need it
Tell me something sweet to get me by
'Cause I can't come back home 'til they're singin'
La, la la la, la la la
'Til everyone is singin'
If you can wait 'til I get home (I get home)
Then I swear to you that we can make this last
La, la
If you can wait 'til I get home (I get home)
Then I swear, come tomorrow, this will all be in our past
Well, it might be for the best
And hey sweetie, well, I need you here tonight
And I know that you don't wanna be leaving
Yeah, you want it, but I can't help it
I just feel complete when you're by my side
But I know you can't come home 'til they're singin'
La, la la la, la la la
'Til everyone is singin'
La, la la la, la la la
If you can wait 'til I get home (I get home)
Then I swear to you that we can make this last
La, la
If you can wait 'til I get home (I get home)
Then I swear, come tomorrow, this will all be in our past
Well, it might be for the best
You know you can't give me what I need
And even though you mean so much to me
I can wait through everything
Is this really happening?
I swear I'll never be happy again
And don't you dare say we can just be friends
I'm not some boy that you can sway
We knew it'd happen eventually
La, la la la, la la la
Now everybody's singin'
La, la la la, la la la
Now everybody's singin'
La, la la la, la la la (if you can wait 'til I get home)
Now everybody's singin'
La, la la la, la la la (then I swear we can make this last)
Now everybody's singin'
La, la la la, la la la
(If you can wait 'til I get home)
Now everybody's singin'
La, la la la, la la la
(Then I swear we can make this last)
Now everybody's singin', la

I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.
No Surprises

Same ideas expressed in Fitter, Happier are expressed in this song. We're told to strive for some sort of ideal life, which includes getting a good job, being kind to everyone, finding a partner, getting married, having a couple kids, living in a quiet neighborhood in a nice big house, etc. But in Fitter, Happier the narrator(?) realizes that it's incredibly robotic to live this life. People are being used by those in power "like a pig in a cage on antibiotics"--being pacified with things like new phones and cool gadgets and houses while being sucked dry. On No Surprises, the narrator is realizing how this life is killing him slowly. In the video, his helmet is slowly filling up with water, drowning him. But he's so complacent with it. This is a good summary of the song. This boring, "perfect" life foisted upon us by some higher powers (not spiritual, but political, economic, etc. politicians and businessmen, perhaps) is not the way to live. But there is seemingly no way out but death. He'd rather die peacefully right now than live in this cage. While our lives are often shielded, we're in our own protective bubbles, or protective helmets like the one Thom wears, if we look a little harder we can see all the corruption, lies, manipulation, etc. that is going on in the world, often run by huge yet nearly invisible organizations, corporations, and 'leaders'. It's a very hopeless song because it reflects real life.
Punchline
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran sings about missing his former partner and learning important life lessons in the process on “Punchline.” This track tells a story of battling to get rid of emotions for a former lover, whom he now realized might not have loved him the same way. He’s now caught between accepting that fact and learning life lessons from it and going back to beg her for another chance.
I think this can applied towards any relationship. (That's actually one thing I love about ADTR. Their songs allow you to drift and think of your own meaning for the song.) This can be someone in the military, away at school, traveling for a job, touring (in this case), etc...
"I know you can’t give me what I need And even though you mean so much to me I can't wait through everything"
I think this means that she is going to move on, even though, she really just wants to be with him.
"Is this really happening?"
And this Jeremy saying, "Come on? Just stay with me... Do you know what this will do to me?"
"I swear I’ll never be happy again And don’t you dare say we can just be friends I’m not some boy that you can sway We knew it’d happen eventually"
And this is Jeremy saying, "Ok fine, do what you want. Just know I'm not going to be around anymore if you follow through with this."
Thanks for posting this. I couldn't figure out what kind of distance they were relating to: military, regular, etc. But you're right; you can apply this to almost anything.
i figured it relates more to the touring....because hes saying that he cant come home til everybody is singing lalala meaning until he gains fans and they are all singing lalala he cant come home....i personally dont c how that relates to the military or anything of the sort....
tkj--
My first thought when I heard this song was that it was related to the military, honestly. If you think about it, you can kinda relate it the La's meaning peace... They can't come home until the war is over and there is peace.
Then again, it could just be me.
I think of it as a missionary (cause I'm lds haha) getting a Dear John letter.
@tkj1991

I always thought of it as the military when i heard it. And the la la la's made me think of happiness. And I always thought he was saying until the war's over and everyone is happy. In other words, until the job is done.
I'm quite new to ADTR, but I've caught that theme of being able to drift. Alot of bands have specific meanings attached to their songs, but this band is different. For me, this song is a romantic one about seperation and the guy finally coming home to his girl in the end. It reminds me of situation with my boyfriend. He's gone alot, but I'm always waiting for him, and its fabulous when he does come home. :)
To me it is totally about being on tour but relates to me right now. My boyfriend is in bootcamp and its hard cause im missing him soooooo much. I really don't plan on leaving him though. :)
@KevinSTL4 I think he is going to the military of some kind, and after they break up, he leaves.
Pretty straightforward song. Here's my (kinda detailed) view on it:
"Hey darling, I hope you're good tonight And I know you don't feel right when I'm leaving Yeah, I want it, but no, I don't need it Tell me something sweet to get me by" The guy is probably in a band and is leaving his girlfriend to go on tour maybe?
"'Cause I can't come back home 'til they're singing La, la la la, la la la 'Til everyone is singing" He won't come back until his band is succesful and their fans are singing for them.
"If you can wait 'til I get home Then I swear to you that we can make this last If you can wait 'til I get home Then I swear come tomorrow this will all be in our past Well it might be for the best" Pretty obvious. As soon as the guy makes it with his band, he's gonna get with her. lol
"Hey sweetie, I need you here tonight And I know that you don't want to be leaving me Yeah, you want it, but I can't help that I just feel complete when you're by my side But I know you can't come home 'til they're singing La, la la la, la la la 'Til everyone is singing La, la la la, la la la" The girl telling him how she feels about the whole thing. Seems that right now she's kinda okay with him leaving.
"I know you can't give me what I need And even though you mean so much to me I can't wait through everything" Eventually, the girl is fed up with all that.
"Is this really happening? I swear I'll never be happy again And don't you dare say we can just be friends I'm not some boy that you can sway" Guy is desperate, kinda tries to convince her to stay with him.
"We knew it'd happen eventually" Still they both knew it would end this way.
And in the end, when the crowd is singing, that means he finally made it with his band but it's over between them. and stuff. :3
Pretty accurate. Although initially I assumed it was about someone in the armed- forces but this make more sense :D
I probably feel this way simply because it applies to my life, but it reminds me of going off to college. You leave behind the one special person, swearing you will be back soon and often. However, as time goes on, coming home isn't as simple as you thought it would be. It sounds to me like she is saying I can't continue to watch you leave, and I can't continue to dream of you being here next to me.
It feels like a few days after a huge fight and the night before he's coming home when she suddenly realized she can't do this any more. Life is taking them in two separate directions, no matter how badly they just want to be together. He swears he can't go on without her and realizes they could never just be friends, but she has herself to take care of and enough faith in him to know that he will be okay.
The truth of it is, they both knew when he went off, it wouldn't work. It hardly ever does. I think the end is saying "We've done what's right, and in some crazy, messed up way, it's brought harmony back into our lives and the lives of everyone we know."
You nailed it. This is exactly how I feel about this song, I've been through it...
Well, while I see your meaning as correct, things could be a little different.

My current Boyfriend is going to go into his second year of college. We were dating the spring & summer before he left. At the time he was 18 & I was 16.
His parents talked him out of our relationship by telling him I would be likely to cheat on him. So when he left I was crushed because he's the first boy that I dated that I FELL for. However, I moved on.. Then, January of this year, after months of NO communication, he came back & I FELL again. He swore he was done with college life & ready for a serious relationship but only wanted it with me. I was SO happy<3 Then he thought he found another girl & left me again.. I still had faith that he was coming back to me. Then in March, he realized he loved me & had to be with me. So he came back & we stayed in communication till he got home in May. then my mom & step dad stepped in, told me I couldn't date him. I lost faith that he would stay because of not being able to see each other, so I left. Now.. We're together & dealing with things keeping us apart by gaining friends who help us see each other.. They're singing la la la, and we're competing against the world around us to be together..
So I imagine that the song is about him leaving many times & coming back, which only makes it harder for her to see him leave.. So she loses faith & leaves. Yet, with EVERYONE around them singing la la la, she's probably going to realize she still loves him & that he's back for good, so her faith will come back.
We just don't know if the end of the song is the permanent end... Or if there's more to the story that we don't get to hear because it gives us a sense of wonder & makes us able to apply it to our own life's this way.

So in a way.. We write the end of the story that this song plays out.
@Alaskaa This is actually my story
Damn, I was just about to post this lyric too... Beat me to it... This song features Sierra Kusterbeck of VersaEmerge.
To me this song's another one about touring. Girlfriend back home, can't take the touring lifestyle of her boyfriend, Breaks up with him etc.
this song was able to keep me and my girlfriend together because it made us realize that our relationship was important. And i'm still with her! that's the best part.
soo fucking good.
I love this song! :) I really think this could just be about a long-distance relationship and it's hard for them. Either long-distance, a band touring, or even the armed forces.
It's deep like Ke$ha :D
There's no such thing as long term relationships. I believe you mean pen pals. I tired of my French one back in middle school. Goodnight Bella. Enjoy your life.
"‘Cause I can’t come back home ‘til they’re singing La, la la la, la la la" Obviously he can't come back home till his band has made it.
The whole song he's asking her to wait for him, and she says "I can't wait through everything"
The song ends with "Now everybody's singing La." Symbolising that he's come home, because he couldn't come home until everyone was singing La.
i love versaemerge, and i love adtr.
amazing song.
WOW fits my life perfectly right now.
