On The Chin Lyrics
There's this boy I know whose afraid of the ocean
Never quite found love he drank the love potion
I'll be on the chain smoking in the basement
Shattered like the windows
All my life I was born to lead
Worry not just leave me be
I'll abide till the end
I'll take it on the chin for you my friend
Find my bag of bones at the back of the station
Said make yourself at home
So I started day drinking
Till I believe in time after 7 8 or 9
You fall yourself to pieces
All my life I was born to lead
Worry not just leave me be
I'll abide till the end
I'll take it on the chin for you my friend
All my life I was born to lead
Worry not just leave me be I'll abide till the end
I'll take it on the chin for you my friend
I'll take it on the chin for you my friend
I'll take it on the chin for you my friend
Never quite found love he drank the love potion
I'll be on the chain smoking in the basement
Shattered like the windows
Worry not just leave me be
I'll abide till the end
I'll take it on the chin for you my friend
Said make yourself at home
So I started day drinking
Till I believe in time after 7 8 or 9
You fall yourself to pieces
Worry not just leave me be
I'll abide till the end
I'll take it on the chin for you my friend
Worry not just leave me be I'll abide till the end
I'll take it on the chin for you my friend
I'll take it on the chin for you my friend

I love this band. I love this, and every other, album they have ever released. They are ridiculously talented and their music is, quite simply, important in my life. That being said, the first two lines of lyrics in this song make me shudder -not in a good way!
Also pretty sure some of these lyrics are incorrect. E.g. think it should be "all my life I was born to leave"
i agree, it's leave, not lead. what a difference it makes for me too, i like it more now. thanks!

Its "lead" according to the disc leaflet.

My interpretation is its an explanation of someone who's life didn't quite turn out the way he thought. Unsure of himself(there's this boy I know who's afraid of the ocean) the ocean could represent taking a leap into the unknown, whether it be love or a life decision, but instead staying constant, making questionable decision in his life. However there is still this sense of purpose he was born with, raised in it, constantly reinforced by his mother or farther maybe hence; "All my life I was born to lead" but,...

However there is still this sense of purpose he was born with, raised in it, constantly reinforced by his mother or farther maybe hence; "All my life I was born to lead" but, decides to just live in the now and not look to the future that is uncertain, he'd rather drink "Couldn't quite find love, he drank the love potion. He drank to numb the pain of indecision or perhaps the feeling of my train left the station. The person is still inherently a good person, true to oneself and his friends, hence the chorus: "I'll take it on the chin for you my friend". He's still a true friend and almost a martyr to his own life at the expense of making his brother's a good one. I can relate.
I agree with tyler99. loved your interpretation.
