I read on an interview that the song is about how flawed humans are, longing to be good but their pride and selfishness holds them down.

I think it has to do with getting over someone you're still in love with. When he mentions "If I could make you the enemy I would" I think it's talking about wanting or trying to maybe find a reason to hate them, but they just can't because they love them too much.
