I think this about how being a "religious" and "good" Christian won't gain your salvation. The only way you can truly be saved is by believing that Jesus died to save your soul from eternal separation and damnation and by following Him. You can do all the things that a "true" Christian is supposed to do, but if you haven't changed to follow Christ, that means nothing. Faith is found in Christ alone, not religion.
I can understand why some will be offended by this song, but I think they are just trying express salvation through jesus without the unnecessary religious part that puts non-christians off.
I think what they're trying to say is that all he needs is the trinity (God/Jesus/the Holy Spirit) - without making it into a fashionable/ attractive-looking "religion"/religious thing. You can be a Christian without being in a church, without all the traditions and formal things.

I think it means that no one can tell me who i want to be with, you are my life, you are my friend and i love you, and no one can tell me that you're not my girlfriend/wife.
