I don't know if it's so much that he neglected her... I think it's more like he loved her, but never told her, and then it was too late. Maybe the girl was untrusting? "Do you like the way you feel / Nothing hurts when no one's real", almost as though she didn't want people getting close for fear of the pain when she lost them. "She's not looking for the holes in all the lies"... She is fine accepting the fallacies about love for what they are, not seeing the exceptions. "I wanna bullet proof your soul".. he wants to make her unable to feel that pain. "You're a bullet through my soul".. her inability to let him in.. "Should have listened when you called my name" ..He should have done something about it sooner, but too late. I love the line "It's like fallin' backwards / into no one's arms"... Like the helplessness of his inability to reach her. (By the way, it's "I won't let you fall", not "I won't let you call")
The girl in this song is numb to all the feelings around her. She doesnt notice the lying or cheating, she seems to have given up on the world ever being a honest place, so instead shes living numb, not caring weather whats going on is good or bad. Hes trying to shake her out of it, trying to make her feel..
last year this song basically kept me sane when i was really starting to lose it, of course being me, it seems like he's singing about me i think my idea of it might be quite a bit different because i wasn't all too with it at the time i grew attached to it, but this is what it means to me: there is this girl that he sees lost in a world she doesn't want to be in and she wants to get out of where she is. he realizes this because he's been through it before and he's trying to tell her that he will be there for her and do anything/be anything she needs and if she hurts him he won't let her now so she won't get upset and not to give herself up for other people's wants.
it's a deep meaning, so deep that ive yet to experince the full effect, great song though
