No one ever said I was a gullible girl
I don't believe everything that I'm told
I've been around and I know the ropes
And I won't get fooled again

I don't believe in no fairy tales
I don't believe in the man in the moon
And no pot of gold or anything else
Is waiting at the rainbow's end

I got no illusions now, I guess I lost them long ago
You're not gonna get me with this, cause I already know
Baby there's no such thing
Baby it just ain't true
And there's no such thing as safe sex
When it comes to loving you

There's always the danger of losing control
And of breaking my heart and exposing my soul
There's just no protection from that look in your eyes
Or the touch of your hands when I break down and cry
There's always the risk of surrendering more
Than I ever intended to do
And there's no such thing as safe sex
When it comes to loving you

I don't believe in the boogie man
I don't believe in no pie in the sky
You can wish upon a star until the stars are gone
That doesn't mean it's really so

There's no such thing as a Santa Claus
There's no such thing as getting money for nothing
And no yellow brick road is gonna take you there
Wherever you've been trying to go

We'll never be as young as this
No matter how we try, we grow
You're not such an innocent boy
And I already know

Baby there's no such thing
Baby it just ain't true
And there's no such thing as safe sex
When it comes to loving you

There's always the danger of giving too much
Love is often a drug
Love is often a crutch
There's no guarantee I can handle it all
The higher the climb
The longer the fall
There's always the danger of losing control
And of breaking my heart and exposing my soul
There's just no protection from that look in your eyes
Or the touch of your hands when I break down and cry
There's always the risk of surrendering more
Than I ever intended to do
And there's no such thing as safe sex
When it comes to loving you
When it comes to loving you...

    Song Meaning

This song isn’t really about “safe sex”. It’s about having sex with someone and falling in love with them. She’s not a stupid girl, she knows that a guy will say “I love you” just to get her into bad (I don’t believe everything that I’m told). She has been hurt by love before and won’t be taken advantage of again (I’ve been around and I know the ropes / And I won’t get fooled again). She doesn’t believe in “true love” or “happily ever after” (I don’t believe in no fairy tales… / I got no illusions now, I guess I lost them long ago). If she sleeps with him she is afraid she will falling in love (And there’s no such thing as safe sex / When it comes to loving you). She doesn’t want to end up heartbroken after having sex with him (There’s always the danger of losing control / And of breaking my heart and exposing my soul) but she feels like she can’t stop herself from wanting him (There’s just no protection from that look in your eyes / Or the touch of your hands). She knows that whenever she sleeps with him there is a chance that she could love him and he will hurt her (There’s always a risk of surrendering more / Than I ever intended to do). He has been around and she thinks he could have broken hearts before (You’re not such an innocent boy). She’s fears giving him her heart and the possibility of him breaking it (There no guarantee I can handle it all).

I love this song! Jim Steinman is an amazing song-writer.

No Surprises

Same ideas expressed in Fitter, Happier are expressed in this song. We're told to strive for some sort of ideal life, which includes getting a good job, being kind to everyone, finding a partner, getting married, having a couple kids, living in a quiet neighborhood in a nice big house, etc. But in Fitter, Happier the narrator(?) realizes that it's incredibly robotic to live this life. People are being used by those in power "like a pig in a cage on antibiotics"--being pacified with things like new phones and cool gadgets and houses while being sucked dry. On No Surprises, the narrator is realizing how this life is killing him slowly. In the video, his helmet is slowly filling up with water, drowning him. But he's so complacent with it. This is a good summary of the song. This boring, "perfect" life foisted upon us by some higher powers (not spiritual, but political, economic, etc. politicians and businessmen, perhaps) is not the way to live. But there is seemingly no way out but death. He'd rather die peacefully right now than live in this cage. While our lives are often shielded, we're in our own protective bubbles, or protective helmets like the one Thom wears, if we look a little harder we can see all the corruption, lies, manipulation, etc. that is going on in the world, often run by huge yet nearly invisible organizations, corporations, and 'leaders'. It's a very hopeless song because it reflects real life.
