Save Rock and Roll Lyrics

I need more dreams
And less life

And I need that dark

In a little more light

I cried tears you’ll never see

So fuck you, you can go cry me an ocean

And leave me be

You are what you love

Not who loves you

In a world full of the word yes

I’m here to scream

No
Wherever I go
Trouble seems to follow

I only plugged in to save rock and roll

Blood brothers in desperation

An oath of silence
For the voice of our generation

How’d it get to be only me?

Like I’m the last damn kid still kicking

That still believes

I will defend the faith

Going down swinging

I will save the songs

That we can't stop singing

No
Wherever I go

Trouble seems to follow

I only plugged in to save rock and roll

Oh no we won’t go

'Cause we don’t know when to quit

You are what you love

Not who loves you

In a world full of the word yes

I’m here to scream

No
Wherever I go

Trouble seems to follow

I only plugged in to save rock and roll

Oh no we won’t go

'Cause we don’t know when to quit

THIS SONG MAKES ME HYPERVENTILATE Also it provided me with the BEST moment of my life; when, during their smaller tour (Mine was on May 31, 2013), they played this song and during the "Oh no/We won't go/We don't know when to quit no" verse, they all stood up (well they all were besides Andy but he stood up) and Andy raised his drumsticks and they were chanting "We don't know when to quit, no" and that's when my heart BURST Anyways to me this song is clearly about their hiatus and journey back.
I mean, when they were creating this album, it was all very secretive and nobody knew. They didn't know if anyone would care about them anymore or like the material they were producing, but they pushed forth anyways. (THANK THE LORD) Like: "I cried tears you'll never see So fuck you You can go cry me an ocean and leave me be" That's them being like "will anyone care?" and then being like "this is for us."

"You are what you love, not who loves you" Phenomenal lyric, let me just say. It makes me want to chew crushed up bricks until my heart stops hurting...if that makes sense?? Anywhooo, this is representative of being true to yourself. You're what you make yourself, not what others want you to be.

"No no Wherever I go go Trouble seems to follow I only plugged in to save rock and roll" "Trouble" is the media/gossip, which they aren't aiming for. They don't want the fame, they want to produce music that they're proud of and that will inspire their fans (mission accomplished).

"We don't know when to quit no" I think this is pretty self-explanatory.

My Interpretation

I thoroughly agree with all of this, but also I thnk the song is also about their past. Fall Out Boy started out so authentic and passionate and they had such possibility, but despite all of that amazing talent, the industry morphed their art into something unrecognizable. They just wanted to make great rock music for this generation. Now, by being true to themselves and their art, they're back to doing that. I think every great band/artist probably goes through that period where they realize that they've lost something along the way. I'm really proud of them for this album....

Guys, this song is for the fans that are saying that they're "selling out."

"So fuck you, you can go cry me an ocean And leave me be"

This is directly being sang for those fans. He's saying, "You think we're changing? You can cry all you want. This is how we are now. Accept it or leave us alone."

"You are what you love Not who loves you"

This means that they're doing what they want to do, and they're happy doing it. They don't care about what the fans are saying.

"Wherever I go, go Trouble seems to follow"

This is again referring to how the fans think they're selling out. How they're finally back, but people still aren't satisfied with them.

"I only plugged in to save rock and roll, rock and roll"

The title of the album is sarcastic. They know this isn't rock and roll. It's just implying that they've changed. So, this is sort if saying that they're going to stay like this - fat from rock and roll.

That's just my interpretation though. I could be wrong, of course.

I love it.

It's about doing something right despite loneliness.

"Blood brothers in desperation An oath of silence For the voice of our generation

Whoa How’d it get to be only me? Like I’m the last damn kid still kicking That still believes"

I think that this means like Rock and Roll as a genre isn't exactly as popular as it used to be and that Elton John is saying the big stars were the voice of their generation and Patrick Stump is saying its like he's like one of the few big Rock and Roll stars still around that believes in that genre

The title of the album is sarcastic. They know this isn't rock and roll. It's just implying that they've changed. So, this is sort of saying that they're going to stay like this - far from rock and roll.

"Oh no, we won't go 'Cause we don't know how to quit, no, no"

Finally, this is saying that they are going to continue making music, because they "don't know how to quit." You can interpret that any way you want to.

That's just my interpretation though. I could be wrong, of course.

ugh patrick's voice when he says "well fuck you, you can go cry me an ocean," and then that transition into, "and leave me be." is so beautiful, fuck.

During their show last night in Paris they said that this song was about Paris, idk why but it may add a piece to understand this song. (Maybe because of the French society conformism we must stand to make our opinions stand.)
