Oblivion Lyrics

Oblivion
by M83 (feat. Susanne Sundfør)
Since, I was young, I knew I’d find you
But our love, was a song, sung by a dying swan
And in the night, you hear me calling,
You hear me calling
And in your dreams, you see me falling, falling

Breathe in the light
I’ll stay here in the shadow, oh...
Waiting for a sign, as the tide grows
Higher and higher and higher

And when the nights are long
All those stars recall, your goodbye, your goodbye

And in the night, you'll hear me calling,
You'll hear me calling
And in your dreams, you'll see us falling, falling
And in the night, you'll hear me calling,
You'll hear me calling
And in your dreams, you'll see us falling, falling

Oh…

Breathe in the light and say goodbye
Breathe in the light and say goodbye.

The first paragraph in effect tells the whole story in hindsight. 'Our love was a song sung by a dying swan' invokes strong imagery of a graceful and beautiful creature (representing the couple's relationship) singing a beautiful song as it is dying. In other words, the relationship was a rare thing of beauty and special; it was ultimately doomed. However, while it lasted, it manifested itself as a bittersweet force of beauty in their story and setting (the beautiful singing of the swan).

The next paragraph expresses the passion the woman feels for her love as well as the desperation with which the woman is searching for him. 'In your dreams you'll see us falling' shows that the two are united and things are spiralling out of their control and foreshadows the sad end the man comes to.

'All the stars recall your goodbye' offers a glimpse into the significance with which she holds her partner, even after he is gone and offers a kind of reconciliation for her loss, suggesting that his death - more like sacrifice - was worthy of remembrance by all the stars in the sky.

This song makes a lot of sense in the context of the film 'Oblivion' for which it was produced.

My Interpretation

my thoughts exactly! well said.

first, i'm pretty sure it says "in the night" in stead of "even now" (which would also make sense with the star theme as well as the mention of dreams).

and second, when i first saw oblivion and heard this song in the end credits, i didn't even like the song. but now that i own the soundtrack and can listen to it on headphones, i find myself listening to this song over and over. i can't stop. i love it. it's so beautiful.

anyway, i agree that it's based on the movie oblivion (which i can't really talk about without spoiling it for those who haven't seen it - so see it! lol) and i also think it's one of those songs that can be easily molded to fit the situation the listener is in. it can be about the death of a loved one, or it can be about a break up, but either way, i think it's definitely about the beauty of a relationship and looking back on it and being grateful for the time you shared even though it's over. beautiful :)

Is anyone else as in love with Susanne Sundfor as I am?

Just me?

Not hardly, I've always thought she is the hottest musician ever. She turns me on in every way, beautiful music, beautiful body! BTW, I wonder if she's married...

--i/me: speaker of truth

--you: embracer and perpetuator (not perpetrator, but also maybe yes, perpetrator) of lies, for various reasons.

--since i was young i knew i'd find you: i've had a feeling about reality my whole life. I had a feeling things weren't quite as they were presented to be. I knew i'd find you out, find your secret, find you hiding, figure out the cover, distinguish lies from truth.

--our love: your term for your relationship to me.

--the death of the swan: the inevitability of the relationship of truth and lies. Lies cannot defeat truth, only disguise it and make happiness crumble. whatever happens was always going to happen, the swan only sings when it dies.

--the night: your illusions of reality that you sustain through deceit and delusion

--me calling: my continuing to share the truth with you no matter how angry it makes you, no matter how much it hurts

--your dreams: your fantasies, odd hopes, dark desires (odd because the failure of truth is an odd thing to hope for, same for dark)

--me/us falling: your desire for me/us to fail, for me/us to be incorrect about reality (me+truth=us (me+you≠us)) so that you do not have to face the pain of it.

--the light: truth, reality

--the shadow: a place to rest while i bide my time waiting for the sign (see below). For example the shadow of a tree on a sunny day in summer when it is hot and dry, where reality is not obscured but you are offered relief from the intensity of the light (see above) and are better able to discern it because it is too intense to see without the aid of the shadow.

--the sign: whatever, i'll know it when i see it.

--the tide: the number of people believing in the truth, speaking the truth, not lying, not hiding, not covering, not manipulating

--long nights: long periods of living in your dreams (see "your dreams" above).

--stars: the ascended, loving and benevolent creatures.

--recall your goodbye: always remembering you, remembering truth, remembering reality, and remembering that which was false as well.

--breathe in the light and say goodbye: my advice to you on how to pull yourself out of the night and your dreams (see above) and find me again if you succeed as i ascend, saying goodbye, or hopefully just...see you later.

--piano solo at the end: my little trail of breadcrumbs that, if followed, will lead you straight out of the hell (the night, your dreams), and into the realm of the benevolent and loving ascended.

To me this is about someone thinking about a past relationship that the other person messed up and they know the other person will regret it.

I will interpret as person #1 as he, and person #2 as she.

Song talks about a guy who found a love he was searching whole life(perfect person). He finally found her and is showing her his love. But no matter how perfect he think she is there is one problem. She doesn't feel the same about him.

"And even now you’ll hear me calling You'll hear me calling"

  • Showing the love towards her.

"And in your dreams you’ll see me falling, falling"

  • In her head she doesn't see this relationship working, because she doesn't feel the same about him.

"Breathe in the light I’ll stay here in the shadows Waiting for a sign, as the tide grows Higher, and higher, and higher"

  • He is waiting for her signals-answers(on his love) in the shadows, which could maybe be interpreted as depression.

"And when the nights are long All the stars recall your goodbye, your goodbye"

  • At nights he is slowly realizing that she will never be with him (nights are very sensitive).

Close your eyes and let’s imagine the set.

A Boy & A Girl as young kids always would go and play by the river all day until night time where they had to go back home but would see a dying swan during their time near the river. The swan would only appear when only them two are at the pond. (Swans symbolize a lot of things including true love from within) by night time given they were apart her love would scream out for him so they could come together and I’m their dreams she’s finally able to fall…fall in love and be with him the way she wants to be.

She wants him to breathe in the light of her warm embrace of her love and dare to have his love scream out as hers do and she is willing to be alone in the dark and wait until it does but during this waiting period the river tides begin to rise higher so they are unable to go by the river and play and the swan dies which is its goodbye and will watch over the two from the stars and will try to get them near at night time elsewhere. Time goes by and they have to leave given the river tide has gotten too high for the location they were living which is where His goodbye comes into play. During there time of growing up they always look up into the stars and able to recall their goodbyes and love they had. The girl always go to the river to visit and see if she would be able to see him there and now finally the boy makes his way to the river one night and finally breathes in her light and the girl then approached the river and sees him and now they’re able to both say goodbye to the river and the swan and live the rest of their life as true lovers.

I will say the song is based on a loved story from kids to adults and wasn’t able to love each other at the time of young age but found each other when they were older.

The song I want playing as I die. Breath in the light and say goodbye. It\'s ... so ... beautiful.

-Since I was young, I knew I’d find you- From the female singer's perspective. The idea of a fated dream romance. Something unrealistic and intangible.

-But our love was a song sung by a dying swan- Obviously meant to denote the beauty of said romance, and it's fait accompli.

-And in the night, you hear me calling,- -You hear me calling- The night denotes being in the dark, not being able to see what is coming. Not being able to see the truth from fantasy. She is calling out to her love, she believes in her heart he can hear her. But she only knows for sure that she is calling out. She only knows for sure that she is searching for him.

-And in your dreams you see me falling, falling- She imagines that he knows her from his dreams, unknown to him in his waking life, that she is his dream woman. The one meant to be with him. Her falling denotes that she is moving farther away and out of his grasp. That he must reach out to her.

-Breathe in the light- -I’ll stay here in the shadow- The light he breathes in, is real life. It is his reality without her. The light is clarity and truth. Her staying in the shadow, denotes yet again that she is lost without him. That this fantasy exists outside of reality. That although she sees this fantasy, that he cannot.

-Waiting for a sign, as the tide grows Higher, and higher, and higher- The sign being waited for is the moment when their fates will finally be aligned so they can be together. Another part of the fantasy. The tide growing higher is life's inevitable move forward, inescapable and unstoppable. It denotes that their love is running out of time and that the tide of time and reality will soon swallow the fantasy, which is their chance to be together.

-And when the nights are long- -All those stars recall your goodbye, your goodbye- The nights being long could reflect on his dreams of her. The stars are lights in the darkness, tiny moments of clarity in the darkness of what she sees as them being unable to find each other. In these moments of clarity, his goodbye represents the reality that he will never truly see her. The beginning of her fantasy falling apart.

-And in the night you'll hear me calling,- -You'll hear me calling- Once again she imagines her search for him.

-And in your dreams you'll see us falling, falling- Saying "us" means that they both now fall out of each other's grasp. She grows ever farther from him, as he falls away from her. Her image as his dream woman is fading from what she perceives as his dream. Which of course is only her fantasy of his dream.

-And in now you'll hear me calling,- -You'll hear me calling- Saying "in now", is a reflection of her urgency. Her last chance for this fantasy. She is calling to him now with everything she has.

-And in your dreams you'll see us falling, falling- Once again she still moves further away from his sight, the fact that he cannot see her remains unchanged. Her fantasy of being his dream girl falls even further away.

-Breathe in the light and say goodbye- The light as before is reality. Breathing in the light is accepting reality. Saying goodbye while breathing in life means that this fantasy of her romance with him is finally at an end. She can now let him go. This phrase repeats as she lets him go.
