I think it's about a guy whose girlfriend is on drugs. He used to be awkward and introverted but getting the girl of his dreams gave him the confidence to face his fears. But something pulls them apart "They come unstuck".. She is running towards a riptide - a strong current that takes over and makes her lose control - and she is taken away to the dark side. I think the riptide is the drugs. Even though the drugs have changed her (she can't even remember the words to the song he likes her to sing) he still wants to be with her. He wants be her "left hand man" - a right hand man usually assists someone in their cause because they believe its a good cause. He doesn't like what she's doing or what she's become but he still wants to support her.. "This cowboy's running from himself And she's been living on the highest shelf" He's desperate to keep her because he didn't like who he was before he met her but she's not bothered by this because she's high. It could also be that she's always been perfect so she couldn't possibly understand what he's going through..
Basically this guy fell in love with a girl who made him a better man. She gets addicted to drugs and she isn't the person he fell in love with anymore but he realizes that he's become dependent on her and can't live without her.
