Techno Ted may be a person who caused Chris incredible emotional pain & trepidation as well as moments of peace & happiness but now is removed and awaiting his fate. Darling may be a different person who is also free of him and can live her life free of Ted's tyranny. "In between all the laughing, and daydreams ... lies: a desert of truth" Lies are like a desert or the omission of Truth: Where there were Lies then Truth was absent. The song, "Techno Ted", may be a cathartic celebration of the downfall of this person.
A gardener told me some plants move
But I could not believe it
'Til me and Hannah Hunt
Saw crawlin' vines and weepin' willows
As we made our way from Providence to Phoenix
A man of faith said
Hidden eyes could see what I was thinkin'
I just smiled and told him
That was only true of Hannah
And we glided on through Waverley and Lincoln
Our days were long, our nights no longer
Count the seconds, watchin' hours
Though we live on the US dollar
You and me, we got our own sense of time
In Santa Barbara, Hannah cried
I miss those freezin' beaches
I walked into town
To buy some kindling for the fire
Hannah tore the New York Times up into pieces
If I can't trust you, then damn it, Hannah
There's no future, there's no answer
Though we live on the US dollar
You and me, we got our own sense of time
If I can't trust you, then damn it, Hannah
There's no future, there's no answer
Though we live on the US dollar
You and me, we got our own sense of time
But I could not believe it
'Til me and Hannah Hunt
Saw crawlin' vines and weepin' willows
As we made our way from Providence to Phoenix
A man of faith said
Hidden eyes could see what I was thinkin'
I just smiled and told him
That was only true of Hannah
And we glided on through Waverley and Lincoln
Our days were long, our nights no longer
Count the seconds, watchin' hours
Though we live on the US dollar
You and me, we got our own sense of time
In Santa Barbara, Hannah cried
I miss those freezin' beaches
I walked into town
To buy some kindling for the fire
Hannah tore the New York Times up into pieces
If I can't trust you, then damn it, Hannah
There's no future, there's no answer
Though we live on the US dollar
You and me, we got our own sense of time
If I can't trust you, then damn it, Hannah
There's no future, there's no answer
Though we live on the US dollar
You and me, we got our own sense of time

Same ideas expressed in Fitter, Happier are expressed in this song. We're told to strive for some sort of ideal life, which includes getting a good job, being kind to everyone, finding a partner, getting married, having a couple kids, living in a quiet neighborhood in a nice big house, etc. But in Fitter, Happier the narrator(?) realizes that it's incredibly robotic to live this life. People are being used by those in power "like a pig in a cage on antibiotics"--being pacified with things like new phones and cool gadgets and houses while being sucked dry. On No Surprises, the narrator is realizing how this life is killing him slowly. In the video, his helmet is slowly filling up with water, drowning him. But he's so complacent with it. This is a good summary of the song. This boring, "perfect" life foisted upon us by some higher powers (not spiritual, but political, economic, etc. politicians and businessmen, perhaps) is not the way to live. But there is seemingly no way out but death. He'd rather die peacefully right now than live in this cage. While our lives are often shielded, we're in our own protective bubbles, or protective helmets like the one Thom wears, if we look a little harder we can see all the corruption, lies, manipulation, etc. that is going on in the world, often run by huge yet nearly invisible organizations, corporations, and 'leaders'. It's a very hopeless song because it reflects real life.
Punchline
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran sings about missing his former partner and learning important life lessons in the process on “Punchline.” This track tells a story of battling to get rid of emotions for a former lover, whom he now realized might not have loved him the same way. He’s now caught between accepting that fact and learning life lessons from it and going back to beg her for another chance.
Amazing
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran tells a story of unsuccessfully trying to feel “Amazing.” This track is about the being weighed down by emotional stress despite valiant attempts to find some positivity in the situation. This track was written by Ed Sheeran from the perspective of his friend. From the track, we see this person fall deeper into the negative thoughts and slide further down the path of mental torment with every lyric.
This song is even more sad, when you realize that when he sings about "New York times", he isn't talking about the newspaper.
what's he talking about?
attempting to reply to ruhfam..I think he's talking about the times they spent together in New York - the whole song is moving from East to West, relating a physical journey with their own relationships journey from beginning to end. The New York times would then be the early part of their relationship, and the memories they shared there
Exactly what I meant. The protagonist is attempting to rekindle the relationship ("I walked into town to buy some kindling for the fire"), while Hannah is tearing it apart ("Hannah tore the New York times up into pieces").
Until I read this thread I had interpreted the tearing up of the NYT positively. I pictured the singer walking off to buy some kindling, while Hannah stays and shreds the newspaper to light the kindling with.

I think the two meanings of the line could work together if the song was viewed not to be strictly about a breakup, but about measuring time by the changing dynamics of a relationship. Like a "Phoenix" it dies and is reborn over and over again. The relationship is continually evolving, moving like "crawling vines," and the couple realize that this change is a more adequate measure of the passing of existence than "time."

So Hannah is tearing up the "times they had in NY," and also tearing up the actual newspaper so they can light the fire, indicating that they are moving on with the relationship, starting over, relighting the fire.

Wow. As I was writing that I think I realized all over again how completely fantastic this song is.
